The Granta occupies a modest riverside plot at 14 Newnham Road, directly overlooking the Mill Pond where punts glide past willows and the adjacent Sheep's Green and Coe Fen commons. The single-bar interior blends 19th-century origins with contemporary updates, creating a cosy, sociable space that feels equally welcoming to locals walking dogs and tourists finishing a punt trip. Outdoor space includes a verandah, patio and beer garden where seating is first-come, first-served and strongly weather-dependent.

Food and Drink

Greene King IPA and rotating guest ales dominate the taps, supported by wines, cocktails and soft drinks. The menu covers pub classics, small plates, Sunday roasts and clearly marked vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes, with food service running until around 21:00 on weekdays. Typical spend falls in the moderate range, with mains between £15 and £21; student discounts apply at selected times.

Visitor Experience

Most people arrive for a 1–3 hour stop, choosing between the indoor bar or garden seating to watch punting activity. History

An inn and brewery opened on the site in 1865, later operating under names including Granta Hotel and Granta Tap. The building has seen successive publicans and a 1976 extension, yet retains its role as a longstanding community and tourist venue in Newnham, reflecting Cambridge's riverside leisure traditions.

Access

A level 10–20 minute walk from central Cambridge via riverside paths or Coe Fen makes the pub easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. Buses including the U1 stop nearby, with taxis taking 5–10 minutes. Parking is limited to nearby meters or Lammas Land; no large on-site car park exists.
