Cambridge gastropub where diners customise fish and chips or pie and mash inside a 19th-century mock-Tudor building on Castle Street
An independent gastropub on Castle Street offering the chance to design your own fish and chips or pie and mash from classic or modern combinations. Set in a 1870s mock-Tudor building opposite Shire Hall, the venue serves real ales, craft beers and more than twenty gins alongside the food in a relaxed neighbourhood setting. Visitors sit indoors at bleached-wood tables or use the small rear courtyard when the weather allows. The pub draws locals, students and travellers exploring Castle Hill, with straightforward access by foot, bike or the Guided Busway from central Cambridge.

Discover more about The Architect
Design-your-own British classics
The Architect specialises in letting diners build their own plate of fish and chips or pie and mash. Choose the fish or pie, batter style or potato topping, sides and sauce from a list that includes both traditional and updated options such as banana-blossom fish for vegan diners and gluten-free batter. Mains start in the eight-to-fifteen-pound range with add-ons increasing the final price modestly. Real ales from Everards, craft beers and over twenty gins complete the order. The approach keeps portions flexible and reduces waste.
Historic building on Castle Street
The pub occupies a 1870s mock-Tudor structure of herringbone red brick that once operated as the County Arms. Refurbished and reopened under current management in 2017, the interior features a single-level bar and dining area finished in pale wood with large windows. A partly covered courtyard at the rear provides additional seating in fine weather. The setting sits on the gentle slope of Castle Street in the Castle Hill neighbourhood, opposite Shire Hall and a short walk from the remains of Cambridge Castle and Kettle’s Yard.
Everyday neighbourhood atmosphere
Service is described as friendly and unhurried. The mix of customers includes locals, university students and visitors walking the northern edge of the city centre. Occasional live music appears on some evenings, though schedules are not fixed. Families appreciate the children’s menu and highchairs; dog owners are welcomed with treats. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are clearly marked. The overall tone remains casual rather than formal, suited to a one-to-two-hour meal or an extended drink.
Practical access from the centre
A fifteen-to-twenty-minute walk from Market Square leads north along Trinity Street, Magdalene Street and Castle Street. Cyclists reach the door in ten to fifteen minutes on Cambridge’s flat streets. The Guided Busway stops at Shire Hall directly outside; other local buses serve Castle Street in eight to fifteen minutes. Taxis from the station take five to ten minutes. Castle Hill Car Park lies immediately opposite with 111 spaces and variable daytime charges. Internal access is level with a large accessible toilet; the approach slope from the city centre can be noticeable for some visitors.
Year-round operation with weather-dependent seating
The venue operates every day except Monday, opening at midday and closing between 22:00 and 23:30 depending on the day. Indoor tables remain available regardless of rain or wind, while courtyard use drops sharply in winter or wet conditions. Clear skies improve views toward Castle Mound but do not otherwise change the core dining experience. No seasonal closure occurs, although school holidays and weekend lunchtimes bring higher numbers of families and tourists.
