The Mill stands at the south edge of Cambridge's historic centre on a corner plot facing the Mill Pond. Its late-18th-century brick structure with plastered upper storey and tiled roof received Grade II listing in 1972. The building once belonged to the milling and wharf district where Bishop's Mill and King's Mill operated on the weir and barges loaded corn and flour for the river trade. Today the immediate surroundings consist of the River Cam, the weir, willows, Darwin College buildings and the triangular public common of Laundress Green. Coe Fen, Sheep's Green and Lammas Land lie beyond, with grazing cattle visible in season.

Inside, the pub comprises a main bar and a smaller wood-panelled snug that seats around 16 and can be reserved. Much of the current interior dates from a 1960s recreation and a careful 2012 refurbishment. A vintage radiogram plays vinyl records. Orders are placed at the bar for cask ales, craft beers, wine or cocktails. Kitchen service runs Monday to Saturday until 20:00 and Sunday until 17:00, with sandwiches available earlier on weekdays. The most distinctive feature is the use of adjacent Laundress Green as an unofficial drinking area. Guests carry drinks across the footbridge onto the public common, where seating consists of grass or the weir wall rather than pub furniture. This space offers direct views of punt traffic, the Silver Street Bridge and the river pool that once served industrial milling. The Green functions as overflow picnic space during warm weather but remains public land, so seating, weather exposure and cattle presence are uncontrolled. Plastic glasses have historically been used for outdoor service.

Most visits begin with a short walk from King's Parade or Market Square. Punters often combine a river trip from the adjacent Scudamore's station with a drink or meal. A single pint or quick lunch takes 20 to 40 minutes; a relaxed session on the Green or a Sunday roast can extend to two hours. Peak summer afternoons see the bar crowded and indoor tables scarce, while off-season or wet days keep activity indoors. The pub appears in the first CAMRA Good Beer Guide of 1974 and has received local awards for real ale and dog friendliness.

The location is reached on foot in five to ten minutes from central Cambridge points and 15 to 20 minutes from the railway station. Cycling routes pass directly along Mill Lane and Silver Street. City buses stop an eight-to-twelve-minute walk away at Drummer Street or Emmanuel Street. Parking is limited and expensive; the nearest multi-storey lies an eight-to-ten-minute walk at Grand Arcade.
