History and Neighbourhood Context

The building dates to at least 1874 as the White Hart public house, serving railway workers and tradespeople in the Victorian terrace district east of central Cambridge. After a long period as a traditional locals' pub it closed in 2003, reopened in 2004 as the acclaimed Backstreet Bistro, and returned to pub identity in 2017 under City Pub Company ownership. The site passed to Trust Inns in 2026. Its position on the corner of Sturton and Hooper Streets places it in the Petersfield residential quarter between the city centre and Cambridge station, near Mill Road.

Interior Layout and Atmosphere

Inside, an L-shaped main bar features wooden accents and a mix of traditional and modern fittings, including wine-bottle ceiling details from the 2017 refit. A smaller intimate room behind the bar works well for dining or private gatherings of up to 26 seated. The overall scale remains neighbourhood-pub size rather than large or cavernous. The atmosphere stays relaxed and community-oriented, with a village-pub-in-the-city character that feels welcoming to residents, workers and visitors alike.

Food, Drink and Garden

Five handpumps serve real ales, including local options such as Pilgrim from Norfolk, alongside craft beers. The kitchen produces classic British dishes including burgers, fish and chips, pies and Sunday roasts, with seasonal and vegetarian or vegan choices available. Meals can be taken in the bar, the smaller room or outdoors. The terrace and garden include both covered and heated sections plus designated smoking and non-smoking areas, giving a tucked-away feel despite the urban setting. Good weather draws significant use of the outdoor space.

Visitor Flow and Practical Experience

Most guests order at the bar, though table service operates in parts of the venue at busy times. A single drink can occupy 30 to 45 minutes; a meal plus drinks often extends to one and a half or three hours. Sunday lunch and weekend evenings see higher numbers, with roasts frequently requiring advance booking. Midweek periods remain quieter. The pub accommodates families during daytime, couples, solo drinkers at the bar, and dog owners. Wheelchair access is available and the site is level.

Access and Surroundings

Walking remains the most common approach: 15 to 25 minutes from Market Square or King's Parade, or 10 to 15 minutes from the railway station. The Stagecoach Citi 2 bus stops within 300 metres. On-street parking exists in the residential area but spaces are limited. The location functions year-round indoors; outdoor seating is weather-dependent but heated sections extend usability into cooler evenings.
