Setting and layout

The Royal Standard occupies a Victorian corner building at the junction of Mill Road and Malta Road, east of the railway bridge in Romsey Town. The pub sits at a slight angle to the street because it predates much of the surrounding terraced housing. Inside, one opened-out bar features a brown-tiled counter and beer-focused décor. A fenced courtyard garden to the side and rear provides mixed covered and open seating with some shade.

Drinks and food

The pub claims Cambridge’s largest draught Belgian beer range, supplemented by UK real ales and a wide real-cider list that changes regularly. A large bottled Belgian selection is also available. Tzatziki operates the in-house Greek kitchen, offering souvlaki, skepasti and small plates ordered via QR code. Gluten-free beer options appear on the published draught list. The emphasis remains on beer and cider rather than standard British pub food.

Atmosphere and pacing

Visitors typically browse the changing beer and cider boards before settling in for a drink or meal. A single drink often lasts 30–45 minutes; food plus drinks commonly extends to 1.5–2.5 hours, with longer stays common in the garden. The mood is relaxed and sociable, mixing regulars, beer enthusiasts and diners. Background music plays at moderate volume. The garden draws crowds on warm days, while rain or cold concentrates people indoors.

History

Opened in 1881 as Mill Road expanded into Romsey Town, the building originally contained two bars. After closing as a pub it operated as an Indian restaurant and later a charity shop. It reopened as a smaller pub on 22 October 2015 under the operators of The Cambridge Blue. Since 2020 the kitchen has served as the flagship site for Tzatziki. The revival preserved one of the few remaining pubs in the neighbourhood after several closures.

Access

Stagecoach route 2 stops at Romsey Town Vinery Road, essentially outside the pub, with an 8–10 minute ride from the city centre. Walking from Parker’s Piece takes 20–30 minutes; cycling takes 8–12 minutes. The Mill Road bus gate prevents ordinary private cars from crossing the bridge, making driving the least convenient option. On-street parking exists nearby but many side streets are residents-permit only.

Practical details

Customer toilets include an accessible WC. The venue is dog-friendly inside on lead, with water bowls and treats provided. Wi-Fi is available. No visitor centre, lockers or formal picnic area exists. Kitchen hours differ from pub hours and should be checked separately. The garden size is modest following the 2015 redevelopment.
