The building opened in 1866 as Cambridge's Conservative Club before becoming the Cosmopolitan Cinema and later the Arts Cinema until 1999. After a period as Baroosh, it reopened in 2020 as Town and Gown under McMullen ownership, restoring cinema-era features and adding the top-floor Black Box Theatre. The name references Cambridge's historic town-and-gown social divide while aiming to bring both communities together through food, drink and performance.
