History of the Site

The building at 67 Lensfield Road has functioned as a public house since at least the 1860s, when it was recorded as the Spread Eagle. An eagle motif remains visible above the entrance. In 2005 the premises were converted into The Snug, a cocktail-and-kitchen concept that operated for sixteen years. Tall Trees relaunched the venue in September 2021 with a stronger emphasis on live music and distinctive tree-branch interior fittings. In 2023 it became Hanks Dirty while retaining the music programme and introducing a fully plant-based menu. It received a local CAMRA award for most improved city pub in 2022 before closing at the end of March 2025.

Physical Setting and Atmosphere

The venue occupies a small basement space entered from street level on Lensfield Road, a mixed academic and residential street south of Cambridge city centre. The single trading area is compact and dimly lit, with quirky dark tree-themed decor and branches creating an eclectic, bohemian feel. Capacity suits seated listening and conversation rather than dancing. Limited outdoor seating and a smoking area existed at the rear. The setting is heavily indoor, with weather-dependent use of the garden space. No panoramic views are available; the character is intimate and atmospheric.

Visitor Experience When Operating

Typical visits centred on cocktails, plant-based food and live performances. Guests arrived for open-mic nights, blues jams or full band sets, staying between one and four hours. The atmosphere remained lively yet contained, suited to music-focused evenings rather than nightclub energy. The space welcomed students, locals, couples and solo travellers seeking vegan options. Volume levels from performances made it less suitable for quiet conversation or young children. No entry fee applied on most nights.

Access and Transport Options

The location offers easy access from central Cambridge. Walking from Market Square takes ten to fifteen minutes. From Cambridge railway station the distance is 1.2 km, a thirteen-minute walk or an eight-to-eleven-minute bus ride. Taxis from the station take roughly two minutes. On-street parking is limited; park-and-ride facilities are commonly used for central Cambridge visits. Buses stop nearby on Trumpington Street and Hills Road. Basement stairs affect step-free access; disabled access is listed but verification on reopening is advised.

Facilities and Practical Details

When open the venue provided restrooms, seating, food and drink service, and a small outdoor area. Dog-friendly policies applied. No visitor centre, lockers or extensive sheltered facilities existed. The modest scale matched a typical independent bar rather than a larger attraction. Mid-range pricing covered drinks and optional food. Visit duration ranged from forty-five minutes for a quick drink to a full evening around a performance.

Current Status and Future Outlook

The premises have remained closed since March 2025 while the freehold owner seeks new tenants. Any reopening will depend on a future operator and may involve changes to name, hours, menu and programming. The historic pub character of the building is retained. Crowd patterns, previously strongest on live-music evenings and during university term time, no longer apply until operations resume.
