Leadworks Lane Park occupies part of the former Chester Leadworks site, a sprawling industrial complex that once dominated this corner of Boughton. When the leadworks finally closed in 2001 after more than two centuries of operation, most of the factory buildings were demolished around 2004 to make way for urban regeneration. In May 2006, a small park was opened on this reclaimed land, transforming a derelict industrial site into a public green space that honors Chester's manufacturing past while providing a tranquil retreat for modern visitors.

The park's most striking feature is the Chester Shot Tower, also known as the Boughton Shot Tower, which stands as the oldest surviving shot tower in the United Kingdom and likely the oldest such structure still standing anywhere in the world. Built in 1799 by Walkers, Parker & Co., this Grade II*-listed tower represents a pivotal moment in industrial innovation. The tower was constructed using the revolutionary shot-manufacturing process pioneered in the 1780s by Bristol inventor William Watts. Molten lead was poured through a pierced copper plate at the tower's summit, and the droplets formed perfect spheres through surface tension as they fell through the air, before being cooled in a vat of water at the base. This elegant method produced uniform lead shot used for ammunition and other purposes, and the Chester tower became one of the earliest examples of this ingenious technology applied at scale.

Chester's connection to lead production stretched back centuries. Lead had been exported from the port of Chester since Roman times, sourced from mines in north-east Wales, particularly from Minera Lead Mines. However, the industry truly flourished after the Chester Canal was constructed in the 1770s, which enabled efficient transport of raw materials and finished goods. Walkers, Parker & Co. established their leadworks in the late 18th century and expanded dramatically throughout the 19th century. By 1812, the complex included not only the shot tower but also pipe-drawing machines and rolling mills for producing lead sheet. At its peak, the entire Chester site covered 21 acres, though much of this comprised a detached mansion with pleasure gardens. The leadworks survived various ownership changes and remained operational for over two centuries before finally closing in 2001, when operations relocated to west Chester.

The park's contemporary centerpiece is 'Spheres of Reflection,' a striking sculpture in stainless steel and blue glass created by artist Edd Snell. The work was directly inspired by the image of lead drops impacting the surface of water—a poetic reference to the shot-making process that once defined this location. The sculpture serves as a bridge between past and present, inviting visitors to contemplate the industrial ingenuity that shaped Chester's economy and landscape.

The park sits beside the Shropshire Union Canal, offering visitors a pleasant waterside environment for walking and reflection. The canal itself was instrumental in Chester's industrial development, and the park's location along its banks creates a natural connection to the broader story of the city's manufacturing heritage. The park provides easy public access to this important historical site, making it possible for anyone to appreciate both the architectural significance of the shot tower and the broader narrative of Chester's industrial past.
