A Celebration of Belfast’s Industrial Past
SoundYard stands as a powerful homage to Belfast’s rich shipbuilding history, located on Queen’s Quay near the Odyssey and Abercorn Marina. This remarkable installation was conceived through a design competition aimed at integrating playful, innovative public art along the Maritime Mile, a historic waterfront stretch connecting key attractions. The structure’s design draws inspiration from the relentless hammering, riveting, and clanging sounds that once filled the city’s shipyards, especially those of Harland and Wolff, famed for building the Titanic.Architectural and Acoustic Design
Rising approximately 6 metres tall and spanning 9.6 metres wide, SoundYard features a circular canopy supported by 16 slender columns. Suspended from this canopy are over 500 metal rods arranged in concentric rings forming two veils: the outer veil of reflective rods acts as an acoustic and visual buffer, while the inner veil contains hollow sound tubes. Motion sensors detect visitors’ movements underneath, triggering motorized steel hammers that strike the tubes to recreate the nostalgic shipyard sounds, creating an immersive auditory experience that grows richer with more interaction.Interactive Experience and Environmental Considerations
Visitors are invited to walk, run, or play beneath the structure, activating sensors that bring the installation to life with rhythmic metallic sounds. The architects—graduates from the University of Ulster, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Westminster—also emphasized sustainability, designing SoundYard with reuse, repurposing, and recycling principles in mind. The surrounding area is smoothly paved with accessible pathways, including a ramped route, seating, and safety features like railings and lifesaving equipment along the waterfront.Day and Night Ambience
By day, SoundYard offers a playful, sensory-rich environment where visitors can engage directly with Belfast’s industrial heritage. After dark, the installation transforms into a mesmerizing light display, with the metal rods illuminated to create a stunning visual spectacle. This dual nature makes it a key highlight of the Maritime Mile, complementing other illuminated attractions such as Titanic Belfast and the Great Light.Location and Surroundings
Situated close to the water’s edge in the Titanic Quarter, SoundYard is part of a vibrant cultural and historical area that celebrates Belfast’s maritime legacy. The site itself has a layered history, previously hosting a brass foundry and coal yard before becoming an open amphitheatre. Today, it serves as a dynamic public space where history, art, and community converge.Practical Visitor Information
While the installation is free to visit and open year-round, there are no onsite restroom facilities. The area includes benches for resting and information panels explaining the installation’s background and usage guidelines. Sound levels are carefully controlled to comply with legal limits, ensuring a comfortable environment for all visitors.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
