Christmas Steps was originally a steep, muddy thoroughfare known as Queene Street until the 19th century. In 1669, local wine merchant Jonathan Blackwell funded the installation of stone steps to ease the climb, transforming it into the stepped street visible today. The street is flanked by mostly 18th-century buildings, many of which are Grade II-listed, preserving the historic character of this once vital route leading from the River Frome towards St Michael’s Church and beyond. An ornate metal archway marks the Perry Street entrance, welcoming visitors into this charming enclave.

The origin of the name "Christmas Steps" remains uncertain. Some theories suggest it evolved from "Knyfesmyth Street," referencing the local trade, while others link it to a nativity scene depicted in stained glass at the nearby Three Kings of Cologne Chapel. The street was also known as Lunsford’s stairs after Colonel Henry Lunsford, a royalist fatally shot here during the English Civil War in 1643. These layers of history add depth to the street’s identity, weaving together commerce, conflict, and faith.

Among the street’s notable past residents was Carlos Trower, known as ‘The African Blondin,’ a high-rope performer and abolitionist who lived at number 7 Christmas Steps in the late 19th century. His legacy is commemorated with a dedicated sign, reflecting the street’s connection to social history. The premises at the bottom of the steps once housed one of England’s oldest fish and chip shops, operating for over 120 years, now replaced by a popular sweet shop.

Along the upper flights of the steps are niches historically used by Victorian beggars and possibly earlier by friars from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, which once stood nearby. The hospital itself, founded in 1240, is remembered through a stone archway adjacent to the steps. The street also features a unique mosaic art piece—a beady eye—embedded high on a wall, inviting curious glances. At the top, modern establishments like Zerodegrees brewery occupy sites once used for tram sheds, blending old and new.

Today, Christmas Steps is a vibrant arts quarter, home to independent shops, cafes, and galleries. The street’s medieval ambiance contrasts with its lively contemporary culture, making it a favored spot for both locals and visitors seeking a blend of history, creativity, and culinary delights. The festive pub at the bottom, once called the Three Sugar Loaves, recalls Bristol’s industrial past tied to the sugar trade, adding another dimension to the street’s rich tapestry.

The steps and many surrounding buildings are protected as part of Bristol’s heritage, ensuring the preservation of this unique urban landscape.
