Carfin Grotto Travel Guide

Carfin Grotto was conceived in the early 1920s by Canon Thomas N. Taylor, parish priest of St Francis Xavier's Parish in Carfin, near Motherwell. Inspired by a pilgrimage to Lourdes in France, Taylor envisioned a Scottish shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The grotto was built largely by hand by local coal miners and parishioners, many unemployed during the 1921 Coal Miners' Strike, who found purpose and hope in this communal effort. From a bare field, the grotto was largely completed within two years and officially opened in 1922, quickly becoming a national pilgrimage site.

The central feature is a faithful replica of the Lourdes grotto, depicting Our Lady's apparition to Saint Bernadette in a terraced garden. The grounds have expanded over decades to include numerous life-size statues of Christ, Mary, Joseph, and various saints. Highlights include the Glass Chapel on a raised headland, outdoor altars for Mass, a sunken garden, a Reliquary, and a detailed representation of Jesus’ life in Loretto house and carpentry shop. The site also features the Way of the Cross with 14 bronze statues, inviting contemplative walks.

Carfin Grotto welcomes over 70,000 pilgrims annually from across Scotland and beyond. It is open 365 days a year, with a pilgrimage season from April to October featuring daily Masses, Confession, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Novenas, and processions. The Sunday processions culminate in Benediction in the Glass Chapel, fostering a deep sense of community and spiritual reflection. The grounds provide a peaceful environment for prayer, meditation, and solace for visitors of all faiths or none.

The grotto has played a vital role in the spiritual and social life of the region, especially among Irish immigrant communities and other Catholic groups such as Lithuanians and Poles. It has hosted large pilgrimages, including tens of thousands in the 1920s, and remains a cherished landmark.
