The maze follows the classical unicursal pattern known as the 'Chartres' or 'Cretan' labyrinth, characterized by a single continuous path that winds through eleven circuits before reaching the center. Measuring roughly 14 meters (about 46 feet) in diameter, the path is formed by raised grass turf rather than narrow bare earth tracks. This design is similar to the pavement labyrinths found in European cathedrals, notably Chartres Cathedral in France, linking the maze to medieval Christian symbolism and ritual.

Historically, turf mazes like Wing’s were often associated with spiritual penance, where monks or penitents would walk the labyrinth on their knees as a form of atonement. The maze is thought to have served as a symbolic pilgrimage, possibly substituting for journeys to Jerusalem during the Crusades.
