History and Architecture

The Augustine Steward House, a Grade II* listed timber-framed building at 14 Tombland, was constructed around 1549 for Augustine Steward, a prosperous mercer and Norwich mayor in 1534, 1546, and 1556. Its ground floor originally functioned as a shop, with upper levels as family quarters, including an attic and undercroft. The structure's iconic lean comes from centuries-old timbers, enhanced by renovations in 1900, 1944 after a fire, and 1992-1995 by the Norwich Preservation Trust. Opposite Norwich Cathedral in the historic Tombland marketplace, it exemplifies Tudor merchant architecture.

Kett's Rebellion Role

In 1549, during Kett's Rebellion against enclosures, the house became headquarters for royal forces under the Earl of Warwick, where Steward negotiated with rebels. This pivotal site witnessed the conflict's suppression, underscoring Norwich's turbulent Tudor history amid its rise as a trading hub post-Norman Conquest.

The Plague Legend

A dark tale from 1578's plague outbreak, following Queen Elizabeth I's visit, claims the house was boarded up with an infected family. Parents perished, but their daughter survived by cannibalism before choking and dying. Her ghost, the Lady in Grey, reportedly haunts the alley, opening doors and moving objects—though legends vary, blending fact with folklore.

Modern Use and Attractions

Today, the well-maintained house operates as Cryptic Escape, featuring 'The Haunted' room recreating the plague story with scares, puzzles, and atmospherics for 2-6 players. Visitors explore Tombland Alley freely, admiring the crooked facade amid nearby landmarks like Samson and Hercules statues and St George Tombland churchyard.

Visiting Tombland Context

In Norwich's medieval heart, the house draws history buffs, ghost enthusiasts, and escape room fans. Its eerie vibe contrasts vibrant cafes and shops, best viewed from the alley. No public interior access beyond escape bookings, but exterior photos capture its Gothic charm.
