Branklyn Garden was established in the early 1920s by John and Dorothy Renton after they built their Arts & Crafts-inspired home on the side of Kinnoull Hill. Their vision was to create a garden filled with rare and unusual plants sourced from around the world. The couple’s dedication was supported by seeds collected by renowned plant hunters such as George Forrest and Frank Ludlow, whose expeditions to China, Tibet, Bhutan, and the Himalayas brought exotic species to the garden. Thanks to Dorothy’s exceptional gardening skills, Branklyn Garden became a living testament to botanical discovery and horticultural passion.

A Diverse and Nationally Significant Plant Collection

Today, Branklyn Garden is celebrated for its outstanding collection of plants, especially rhododendrons, alpines, and peat-garden species. It holds several National Collections, including Meconopsis (the Himalayan blue poppy), Rhododendron (Taliense section), and Cassiope. The garden’s layout is thoughtfully designed to showcase a rich variety of flora, with seasonal highlights such as dog’s tooth violet and Himalayan blue poppies in spring, magnolias and purple Japanese maple in summer, and the katsura tree’s burnt sugar scent in autumn.
