Built around 1530 by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, Craignethan Castle stands as one of Scotland’s finest examples of early artillery fortification. Its design was revolutionary, featuring a double-pile residential tower house that was unusually spacious and advanced for its era. The castle’s defensive capabilities were enhanced by a deep surrounding ditch and an extraordinary caponier—a stone-vaulted shooting gallery inside the ditch that allowed defenders to fire on attackers from a protected position, a rarity in Britain.

The castle’s layout includes an inner courtyard separated from the outer courtyard by the defensive ditch. Visitors can explore the remains of several towers including the gate tower, north-east tower with kitchen facilities, and the well-preserved south-east tower that housed a chapel. The tower house itself offers multiple levels to explore, from the basement kitchen to the rooftop, connected by spiral and straight staircases. The ruins convey a strong sense of the castle’s original scale and domestic functions.

Craignethan Castle is dramatically situated on a rocky bluff overlooking the Nethan Gorge, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
