Faskally Forest Travel Guide

Faskally Forest was established in the 19th century by Archibald Butter as a model woodland on the grounds of Faskally House. The estate later became a Forestry Commission school, where young foresters were trained in woodland management and restoration, especially after the extensive felling during wartime. This forest served as a testing ground for innovative forestry techniques, including mixed tree species planting and diverse woodland structures. In 1953, the estate was acquired by the Forestry Commission, now Forestry and Land Scotland, continuing its legacy of sustainable forest management.

The forest boasts around 25 recorded tree species, with a blend of native and non-native varieties. Native species include Scots pine, silver and downy birch, ash, oak, rowan, common alder, hazel, and bird cherry. Non-native species such as Douglas fir, European beech, European larch, Norway spruce, and silver fir also thrive here. Some trees in Faskally are estimated to be over 200 years old, providing a living connection to the forest's origins. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails like the easy-access Dunmore Trail, which follows the shore of the peaceful Loch Dunmore, featuring a picturesque boathouse and a charming wooden footbridge. Water lilies bloom in summer on the loch, while the forest is alive with birdlife, including kingfishers, herons, and goldeneye ducks nesting in the trees. The terrain includes smooth gravel paths with some moderate slopes and natural forest floor sections with roots and steps.

Faskally Forest is renowned for hosting The Enchanted Forest, Scotland’s largest outdoor autumn event. This spectacular light and music show transforms the woodland into a magical experience, illuminating the trees with vibrant colors and creative installations. The event attracts over 160,000 visitors annually, raising awareness and funds for local charities while promoting woodland conservation. Organizers prioritize minimizing environmental impact, ensuring the forest’s wildlife and habitats remain protected.

The forest supports a diverse range of wildlife, including birds such as kingfishers, herons, and nesting goldeneye ducks.
