Parc Cefn Onn stands as a Grade II listed historic park on the northern fringes of Cardiff, recognized for its special historic interest in Wales. The upper park was originally laid out about 100 years ago by Ernest Prosser, a former owner and director of the nearby Rhymney Valley Railway. His vision shaped the park’s distinctive landscape, with tumbling streams and winding paths that follow the gentle valley carved by the Nant Fawr stream. This historic layout remains at the heart of the park’s character today.

Woodland Gardens and Exotic Flora

The park is celebrated for its magnificent collection of native and exotic trees, set within an intimate valley that creates a serene woodland atmosphere. The southern part of the park features a woodland garden established after 1944, while the northern historic garden, known as The Dingle, contains rare and exotic plants. Seasonal highlights include spring carpets of bulbs, vibrant camellias, rhododendrons, and azaleas, as well as rich autumnal colors from the diverse tree and shrub collection.

Natural Features and Wildlife Habitat

Streams, ponds, and woodlands combine to form a rich haven for wildlife throughout the year. The Nant Fawr stream gently cascades through the park, supporting diverse flora and fauna. The semi-natural oak and beech woodland called Coed Transh yr Hebog lies near the top of Caerphilly Mountain, adding to the park’s ecological diversity. Visitors often encounter a variety of birds, insects, and fungi, making it a rewarding spot for nature observation.

Family-Friendly Spaces and Recreational Trails

Parc Cefn Onn offers a large open field at the top, ideal for children to play and families to picnic. The park features a Wildlife Explorer Trail designed for children, along with 12 other activities to engage young visitors. Waymarked footpaths throughout the park link to the wider Caerphilly Mountain footpath network, allowing for leisurely walks or more extended hikes. Two routes within the park can be completed in about an hour, though a more relaxed visit can take two hours or more.

Accessibility and Visitor Facilities

The park is wheelchair accessible and offers a Tramper hire service to assist visitors with mobility challenges. Advance booking is recommended for the Tramper, which can be hired for £2.50 per hour. Parking is available on site, though it can fill up during busy periods. The park is open daily from 7am until 30 minutes before sunset, with free entry. While there is no on-site café, visitors can enjoy picnics in the peaceful surroundings.

At the park entrance, a mural artwork in the subway tells the story of Parc Cefn Onn, adding a cultural dimension to the natural setting. The summerhouse and former swimming pool near the pond are historic features linked to the park’s early 20th-century origins, built to help alleviate illness in the Prosser family. These elements enrich the visitor experience by connecting nature with local heritage.
