Getting There

  • Car

    From any location in Litoral, head towards Route 1 (Ruta 1) which connects the region to Montevideo. Follow Route 1 South until you reach the outskirts of Montevideo. Continue straight until you hit the intersection with Avenida 18 de Julio. Take a left turn onto Avenida 18 de Julio and follow it until you reach the roundabout at Plaza Independencia. From the roundabout, take the exit onto Avenida Libertador Brigadier General Juan Antonio Lavalleja. Continue on this road until you see signs for Cerro. Follow the signs to José Batlle y Ordóñez, where you will find Fortaleza del Cerro. There is parking available near the site, but it may incur a small fee.

    If you prefer public transport, take a bus from the main bus terminal in Litoral to Montevideo. Look for buses heading to 'Montevideo Ciudad' or 'Cerro' as these will stop close to your destination. The bus fare is approximately 200-300 Uruguayan Pesos (UYU) depending on the company. Once in Montevideo, exit the bus at the main terminal and transfer to a local bus heading towards Cerro, such as line 56 or 57. The fare for this bus is around 40 UYU. Alight at the stop closest to José Batlle y Ordóñez, and you will find yourself within walking distance of Fortaleza del Cerro.
