History of Xuan Huong Lake

A Reservoir for the Colonial Resort

Xuan Huong Lake was formed in stages during the French colonial development of Dalat, when the highland settlement was being shaped as a cooler retreat and administrative resort. Early dam works on the Cam Ly River are commonly dated to 1919, creating a reservoir that became known as Grand Lac. The water gave the planned town an expansive landscape feature and helped establish the open, park-like character that still distinguishes Dalat’s centre. Roads, villas, public institutions and gardens were subsequently arranged around the lake and the surrounding hills rather than around a dense urban core.

Rebuilding the Lakeside Landscape

The lake’s present appearance reflects reconstruction and modification rather than a single uninterrupted building project. Flooding and failures in the early dam works required repairs, and the shoreline was progressively shaped with roads, promenades and planted public spaces. These changes strengthened the lake’s role as both practical infrastructure and civic scenery. The surrounding area developed a distinctly layered appearance: colonial buildings and formal gardens stood alongside later Vietnamese institutions, commercial streets and transport routes, while the water remained a defining element of Dalat’s urban plan.

From Grand Lac to Xuan Huong

After the end of French colonial rule, the lake became part of a Vietnamese civic landscape rather than simply a feature of a colonial resort. It was renamed Xuan Huong Lake in the 1950s, commemorating the poet Ho Xuan Huong and giving the city’s central landmark a distinctly Vietnamese cultural reference. Public parks, flower displays and recreational facilities around the shore grew in importance as Dalat expanded. The name also helped connect the lake with literary culture, rather than leaving it defined only by its earlier colonial designation.
