History of Binh Thanh District

Riverine Land Before Urban Expansion

Before modern Ho Chi Minh City spread across the area, the land now associated with Binh Thanh was part of the waterways and cultivated outskirts around Gia Dinh. The Saigon River, the Thi Nghe Canal and smaller channels shaped movement, drainage and settlement, while Thanh Da remained notably rural compared with the colonial city across the water. Ferries, paths and canals connected villages and agricultural land to the wider Gia Dinh region, establishing the water-oriented geography that still distinguishes the district from the dense central quarters.

Gia Dinh's Northern Approach
