Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car from the Northwest region of Vietnam, you will want to head towards Hanoi. Use National Route 6 (QL6) which connects to National Route 32 (QL32). Follow QL32 until you reach the outskirts of Hanoi. As you approach Hanoi, follow signs for the city center (Hoàn Kiếm District). You will merge onto Trần Hưng Đạo Street, then take a left onto Hàng Bài Street. Continue on Hàng Bài, which will lead you directly into the Old Quarter area, specifically to P. Hàng Ngang, Hàng Đào. Parking might be limited, so consider finding a nearby parking lot or street parking.

• Bus

  For those using public transportation, take a bus from your location in Northwest Vietnam to Hanoi. Buses frequently depart from major towns in the Northwest, such as Sơn La or Điện Biên Phủ. Look for buses heading to My Dinh Bus Station in Hanoi. The cost for a bus ticket will vary but typically ranges from 100,000 to 200,000 VND (approximately $4 to $8). Once you arrive at My Dinh Bus Station, transfer to a local bus (Bus No. 86 or 32) heading to Hoàn Kiếm District. The bus fare is around 10,000 VND (less than $1). Get off at the stop nearest to the Old Quarter, and from there, it's a short walk to P. Hàng Ngang, Hàng Đào.

• Train

  If you prefer to travel by train, you can catch a train from major railway stations in the Northwest such as Sơn La or Lào Cai to Hanoi Railway Station. Train tickets can cost anywhere from 150,000 to 400,000 VND (approximately $6 to $17) depending on the class and time of booking. Upon arrival at Hanoi Railway Station, you can either take a taxi (approximately 50,000 to 100,000 VND) or a local bus (Bus No. 86 or 32) to reach the Old Quarter. Get off at a stop near P. Hàng Ngang, Hàng Đào.

  For the more adventurous travelers, renting a motorbike in the Northwest and riding to Hanoi can be an exhilarating experience. Ensure you have a valid driver's license and wear a helmet. Follow the same route as you would by car, taking QL6 and QL32 towards Hanoi. Upon reaching the city, navigate through the streets to reach the Old Quarter. Be aware of traffic regulations and local driving customs. Fuel costs will depend on your bike's consumption but expect to pay around 100,000 VND ($4) for a full tank.
