If you are starting from downtown Charlottesville, head east on Main Street. Walk for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with 1st Street SE. Turn left onto 1st Street SE and continue walking for another 0.3 miles. You will come to the intersection with East High Street (US-250). Cross the street and continue walking straight onto East High Street for about 0.4 miles. You will see a sign for James Monroe Parkway on your right. Turn onto James Monroe Parkway and walk for about 0.7 miles until you reach the entrance to James Monroe's Highland, which will be on your left. The total walking distance is approximately 1.9 miles and should take around 40-45 minutes.

From downtown Charlottesville, walk to the nearest bus stop at the intersection of 2nd Street NE and Main Street. Take the Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) bus Route 7 towards the 'Monticello' stop. After approximately 15 minutes, get off at the stop for 'James Monroe Parkway.' Once you disembark, walk approximately 0.2 miles down James Monroe Parkway and you will reach James Monroe's Highland on your right. The total travel time by bus is about 25-30 minutes, including walking to the bus stop.
