Getting There

  • Public Bus

    Start by finding your nearest bus stop in Chesapeake. Take the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) bus route that heads towards the Greenbrier area. You will want to board the bus heading towards the 'Greenbrier Mall.' Once you reach Greenbrier Mall, transfer to Bus Route 1A towards 'Oceanfront.' Stay on the bus until you reach the stop at 'Great Bridge Blvd and VA-168.' From here, you will need to walk approximately 0.5 miles north along VA-168. Follow the pedestrian walkway, and you will see the entrance to the Northwest River Natural Area Preserve on your left.

  • Bicycle

    If you have access to a bicycle, start from the center of Chesapeake. Use the local bike trails that connect to the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. Follow the trail until you reach the intersection with VA-168. Continue north on VA-168, which has bike lanes. The Northwest River Natural Area Preserve will be on your left after about 3 miles of biking. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow the road safety rules.

    If you're close enough to walk, begin your journey at a central location in Chesapeake, such as the Chesapeake City Park. From there, head north towards Great Bridge Blvd. Cross over to VA-168. Walk along the side of the highway for approximately 2 miles. You will need to navigate through pedestrian crossings and be cautious of traffic. The Northwest River Natural Area Preserve will be on your left, and you'll find an entrance to the preserve.
