Car
If you are driving along Skyline Drive, you will need to head towards Mile Marker 24, which is where the Elkwallow Picnic Area is located. From the north, you can enter Skyline Drive through Front Royal and head south. After passing the Thornton Gap Entrance Station, continue driving until you reach Mile Marker 24. The picnic area will be on your right side. There is a parking area available, but it's advisable to arrive early during peak seasons as it can fill up quickly. Note that entrance to Shenandoah National Park requires a fee, which is $30 per vehicle for a 7-day pass.
Public Transportation
Public transportation options are limited near Skyline Drive. The closest major town is Luray, VA. If you are using public transit, you can take a bus or train to Luray. From Luray, you will need to arrange a taxi or rideshare service to take you to the Elkwallow Picnic Area, as there are no direct public transport routes to the picnic area. Ensure to check the schedules ahead of time and consider the costs, as taxi services can vary.
