History of Elkins

Indigenous Lands and Mountain Valleys

The Tygart Valley and surrounding highlands were inhabited and travelled by Indigenous peoples long before the emergence of Elkins. The region formed part of a wider Appalachian landscape used for hunting, seasonal movement and exchange, and later became contested as colonial settlement expanded westward. Its rivers and mountain passes influenced subsequent travel and settlement, while the difficult terrain limited large-scale development for many years. The area's later history cannot be separated from the displacement of Indigenous communities and the transformation of forests and river valleys by incoming settlers.

Settlement in the Tygart Valley

Euro-American settlement grew in the Tygart Valley during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, supported by farming, small mills and connections along the river. Randolph County, created in 1787, became an important administrative centre for a broad mountainous territory. The settlement that became Elkins developed within this rural landscape, where transportation remained challenging and communities were scattered among valleys and ridges. Roads and river routes connected local farms and settlements, but the region's economic possibilities remained constrained until the arrival of modern rail transport.

Railways Create a City

Elkins was incorporated in 1890 and expanded rapidly as railways reached the Tygart Valley. The town was named for Stephen Benton Elkins, a businessman and politician associated with the development of railroad and industrial interests in West Virginia. Rail connections made it possible to move timber, coal and agricultural products from the highlands to larger markets, while bringing workers, merchants and new investment into the valley. The depot and associated railway infrastructure helped establish Elkins as a commercial and transport centre, giving the young city much of the urban form visible in its historic core.
