History of Fairmont

Settlement at the River Confluence

Fairmont developed at the meeting of the West Fork and Tygart Valley rivers, an important natural location for movement through the north-central Appalachian interior. European-American settlement expanded in the early nineteenth century around a community first known as Middletown, while the nearby settlement of Palatine grew on the opposite side of the river.
