After about 1.5 miles, take a right onto Big Bay Road. Continue straight for approximately 3 miles until you reach the intersection with Houghton Falls Road. Turn left onto Houghton Falls Road, and you will find the parking area for Houghton Falls Nature Preserve on your right after about 0.5 miles. The parking area is marked and well-maintained.

  • Bicycle

    For those who prefer to cycle, you can follow a similar route as if you were driving. Start on Main Street in La Pointe and bike southeast toward Big Bay Road. After about 1.5 miles, turn right onto Big Bay Road. Continue straight for approximately 3 miles, then turn left onto Houghton Falls Road. The parking area will be on your right after about 0.5 miles. Ensure you're wearing a helmet and be cautious of traffic along the roads.

  • Walking

    If you are walking from La Pointe, begin at the center of town on Main Street. Walk southeast for about 1.5 miles until you reach Big Bay Road. Take a right turn onto Big Bay Road and continue for approximately 3 miles. Look for Houghton Falls Road on your left and turn onto it. The parking area is about 0.5 miles down this road on the right. It is advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water for the journey.

If you are coming from the mainland, take the Madeline Island Ferry from Bayfield, WI. The ferry ride costs approximately $15 round trip for a car and driver, and $7 for each additional passenger. Once you arrive on Madeline Island, you can follow the directions for car, bicycle, or walking as outlined above.
