Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the center of the Wind River Range. Use WY-26 W or any local road leading to Riverton. Once in Riverton, take US-26 E towards Casper. Continue on US-26 E until you reach WY-220. Turn left onto WY-220 and follow it for approximately 30 miles. Independence Rock State Historic Site will be on your right. Look for the signs indicating the site.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in this region. You can take a bus from Riverton to Alcova, but you may need to check local schedules as they can vary. Once you arrive in Alcova, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to reach Independence Rock, which is about 10 miles away from the bus stop. Make sure to confirm the availability of rideshare services in advance.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, consider biking to Independence Rock. From the Wind River Range, take WY-26 W toward Riverton, then connect to US-26 E. After reaching WY-220, follow it to Independence Rock. The ride is approximately 40 miles one way, so be prepared for a long journey with ample water and snacks.

• Walking

  Walking directly to Independence Rock from any location in the Wind River Range is not practical due to distance and terrain. However, if you are nearby, you could take a short hike to the rock itself from the parking area once you arrive by car or public transport. The area around Independence Rock is suitable for walking, with trails and picnic areas available.
