Car
If you are traveling by car, start in the city of Mongu, the capital of Barotseland. Head west on Kalabo Road (P4H8+MRC) towards Kalabo. The Barotse flood plain is accessible via this road. The drive will take approximately 1 to 2 hours depending on road conditions. Ensure you have enough fuel, as fuel stations may be sparse along the route. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and be cautious of potholes.
Public Transportation
To reach the Barotse flood plain by public transportation, take a minibus or bus from Mongu to Kalabo. These leave from the central bus station in Mongu. The fare is usually around ZMW 50-100 (approximately $3-7), depending on the vehicle and the time of day. Once you arrive in Kalabo, you may need to hire a local taxi or arrange a bicycle taxi to take you to the flood plain area, which is about 5-10 kilometers from the town center.
Bicycle
For the more adventurous travelers, renting a bicycle in Mongu is an option. After reaching Kalabo via bus, you can ride the remaining distance to the Barotse flood plain. The area is generally flat, but be prepared for some rough patches. Make sure to carry plenty of water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the way.
