Car
If you are traveling by car from the town of Kariba, head east on the A2 highway towards the border with Zimbabwe. After approximately 30 kilometers, turn south onto the road leading to the Chitake area. This road is not well marked, so be attentive to local signs. Continue on this road for about 20 kilometers until you reach a fork. Take the left fork, which will lead you closer to the Chitake River. The last stretch of road may be rough and requires a 4x4 vehicle. Make sure you have sufficient fuel, as there are no fuel stations near the river.
Public Transportation
From Kariba, you can take a shared taxi or minibus headed towards the Zambezi National Park. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Chitake River entrance. This journey typically costs around $10-$15 USD per person. Once dropped off, you may need to arrange for a local guide or vehicle to take you the remaining distance to the river, as it is not easily accessible on foot. Hiring a guide can cost around $30-$50 USD, which usually includes a return to the drop-off point.
Walking
If you're feeling adventurous and are already near the Chitake River entrance, you can walk from there, but be aware that it's about a 5-7 kilometer hike through the bush. Make sure you're equipped with proper hiking gear and plenty of water. It's advisable to go with a guide for safety reasons, as there are wildlife risks in this area.
