Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start your journey from the city of Mansa, the capital of Luapula Province. Head east on the Mansa-Chipili road for about 50 kilometers until you reach the junction near the town of Chipili. Turn onto the road leading to Chienge. Continue for approximately 35 kilometers until you reach the village of Chienge. From Chienge, follow the signs toward Lumangwe Falls, which is about 15 kilometers away. The road may become less maintained as you approach the falls, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Ensure you have enough fuel, as there may not be gas stations nearby.

• Public Transport

  For those using public transportation, you can take a bus from Mansa to Chienge. Buses may leave from the main bus station in Mansa. The journey to Chienge typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the road conditions. Upon reaching Chienge, you will need to hire a local taxi or ask for a shared minibus to take you to Lumangwe Falls, which is approximately 15 kilometers away. Ensure you negotiate the fare beforehand, as prices can vary. The total cost for the bus from Mansa to Chienge is usually around 30 Zambian Kwacha, while the taxi fare to the falls may range from 50 to 100 Kwacha depending on the number of passengers.

• Walking

  If you are in Chienge and prefer a more adventurous option, you can walk to Lumangwe Falls from the village. The distance is about 15 kilometers, and it may take approximately 3 to 4 hours on foot. Ensure you carry enough water and wear comfortable shoes, as parts of the trail may be rugged. It's advisable to start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. Along the way, you can enjoy the local scenery and possibly spot some wildlife.
