What to expect
La Grande Poste d'Alger
After meeting your guide at the great poste office, you will start from there to see A stunning neo-Moorish building from the French colonial era, completed in 1910. It’s one of the most famous landmarks in Algiers, known for its white façade, arches, and impressive domes. Today, it’s no longer a post office but a symbol of the city’s colonial architecture and cultural identity.
Emir Abdelkader square
You'll visit Emir Abdelkader Square, one of the most symbolic places in downtown Algiers. Here, you'll see the impressive statue of Emir Abdelkader, the national hero who led the resistance against French colonization in the 19th century. Look up at the statue on horseback – it's not just a monument, it's a reminder of Algeria’s fight for dignity and independence. Surrounding the square, you'll notice French-style architecture, grand administrative buildings, and wide boulevards that reflect Algiers' colonial past.
Downtown Algiers
As we walk through Downtown Algiers, you’ll feel the unique rhythm of the city — where past and present live side by side. You’ll stroll down wide French-designed boulevards, lined with elegant white buildings, iron balconies, and old Art Deco cinemas. This area, built during the colonial period, is often called “Algiers the White” because of its bright architecture and Mediterranean charm. You’ll see locals shopping, chatting at cafés, and street vendors selling everything from books to sweets — it’s lively, authentic, and full of character. Along the way, I’ll point out hidden corners, old hotels, cultural spots, and historical buildings that many tourists miss.
Martyrs' Square
Next, we’ll arrive at Martyrs’ Square, one of the most important and vibrant places in Algiers. This large open square sits right between modern Algiers and the ancient Casbah, creating a powerful contrast between the past and the present. It’s named in honor of the Algerian heroes who died for the country’s independence.
Ketchaoua Mosque
Now we’ll stop at the beautiful Ketchaoua Mosque, one of the most iconic and historically rich buildings in Algiers. Standing at the foot of the Casbah, this mosque tells a story of faith, culture, and colonial history. Originally built in the 17th century during the Ottoman period, it was later turned into a cathedral by the French, and then restored back into a mosque after independence. As we stand in front of it, take a look at the stunning façade — a blend of Moorish and Byzantine architecture. You’ll notice the twin staircases, the grand archways, and the unique mix of styles that reflect centuries of transformation.
Just a few steps from Ketchaoua Mosque, you’ll find one of Algiers’ hidden treasures: the Palais Mustapha Pacha. This beautiful 18th-century palace was once the home of Mustapha Pacha, an Ottoman governor of Algiers. From the outside, it looks modest… but once inside, you’ll be amazed by the intricate tile work, cedar wood carvings, delicate arches, and peaceful interior courtyards — a true example of Ottoman elegance and refinement.
Note: Since our tour lasts about 3 hours, we’ll spend a short but meaningful time in La Casbah. You’ll enter the historic old quarter of Algiers, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Step into a fascinating maze of narrow, winding alleys lined with whitewashed houses, ornate wooden doors, and lively street life. Though brief, this visit offers a real feel for the atmosphere — the heart of old Algiers, rich with stories of resistance, culture, and daily life. We’ll walk through some key streets, admire traditional homes from the outside, and enjoy stunning views of the bay below.
Stah El Bahdja
