Apollo was the protector of the region and was worshipped there like no other god. The temple of Apollo became the home of the most popular priestess of that period, Pythia. Legend has it, that Pythia would inhale fumes coming from a schism in the ground beneath the temple, that would bring her into a state of delirium crying out words, which the priest of the oracle would interpret as the prophecy. Pythia made the oracle so famous that it would be visited from all around the world in order to provide answers to crucial political, religious, and military issues
