What to expect
Il primo tratto del nostro percorso ci condurrà dinanzi all’impressionante castello di Blackness, o “la nave mai salpata”, come è tradizionalmente conosciuto. Questo luogo nasce come fortificazione nel XV secolo, e fu utilizzato come porto dal vicino borgo reale di Linlithgow. Già nel XVI secolo, diventò una delle fortificazioni con l’artiglieria più avanzata del suo tempo, motivo per cui sarebbe stato attaccato ripetutamente nel corso della sua storia. Oggi, Blackness si trova in un ottimo stato di conservazione. I fan di Outlander potrebbero riconoscere Fort William negli esterni del castello, o ricordare la mitica scena in cui Jamie Fraser venne frustato quasi fino alla morte dal perverso Jonathan Randall. Si svolgerà solo la visita esterna del castello.
Lallybroch, la leggendaria casa di Jamie Fraser, sarà il secondo luogo che visiteremo. Questa casa-torre del XVI secolo è diventata praticamente un luogo di pellegrinaggio per i fan della serie che cercano di riviverne alcuni dei momenti più emozionanti.
Proseguiremo con una fermata a Linlithgow, dove potremo ammirare il magnifico palazzo, una delle principali residenze dei re di Scozia nei secoli XV e XVI. Le sue mura videro nascere i famosi Giacomo V e Maria Stuarda. A partire dal 1603, questo palazzo smise di essere utilizzato come residenza reale, nonostante fosse stato ristrutturato da maestri artigiani in un raffinato stile rinascimentale francese. Nel 1745, Bonnie Prince Charles era solito frequentarlo per il suo forte simbolismo legato alla dinastia Stuart ma, alla fine, gli eserciti del duca di Cumberland, figlio di Giorgio II d’Inghilterra, furono i responsabili della sua distruzione avvenuta tra le fiamme. Oggi, la silhouette del Palazzo di Linlithgow si presenta maestosa accanto ad un incantevole lago circondato da praterie e boschi. La nostra ultima fermata sarà a Culross, un incantevole borgo del XVII secolo situato sulla riva nord del fiume Forth, ravvivato da graziosissimi cottage e dominato dal suo caratteristico palazzo giallo e dalle rovine della sua abbazia cistercense. Indubbiamente, passeggiare per le sue strettoie fino a raggiungere la Croce del Mercato, è come fare un viaggio indietro nel tempo. Gli amanti di Outlander riconosceranno facilmente Cranesmuir, il villaggio più vicino al Castello di Leoch, assieme alla casa del procuratore, dove Geillis Duncan viveva con suo marito.
