What to expect
Our meeting point is at the centre of Podgorica – Independence Square (formerly Square of the Republic), at the fountain. In case of rain, the guide will be positioned by the Societe Generale Bank, under the eaves surrounding the square. We will pass by Municipality building, briefly stop in front of the statue of Marko Miljanov, one the famous generals and writers from the end of the 19 century.
Montenegrin National Theatre
From the Bokeska street, we will pass by the National Theatre, and continue towards the statue of Petar II Petrovic Njegos, a famous prince-bishop, writer and philosopher.
Moraca River
We continue our journey via one of the bridges over Moraca River, which flows through Podgorica.
Our tour leads us over the Moraca river, via one of the pedestrian bridges, and from here we will have an excellent view of the Millennium Bridge, one of the recognizable landmarks of Podgorica.
Vladimir Vysotsky Monument
We will also make a brief stop at the statue of Vladimir Vysotsky, a Russian poet, singer and songwriter, who died young, but who lived in Podgorica for a while.
We will cross the river Moraca again, at Blazo Jovanovic Bridge and continue towards Sastavci (or Skaline), at the confluence of the rivers Ribnica and Moraca.
Sastavci
Sastavci or Skaline is a very picturesque site, but admittedly uncared for. Above the confluence stand barely visible ruins of the fortress of Ribnica. These are known as Nemanjin grad, as it was here that Stefan Nemanja who subsequently founded Nemanjic dynasty, was born. We will cross an old picturesque stone bridge on our way to Stara Varos, the oldest preserved quarter of Podgorica, dating back to the Ottoman rule.
Starodoganjska Mosque
At Stara Varos we will briefly stop at the Starodoganjska Mosque, built in 15th century and for a long time maintained by the traders from the nearby shops.
Sahat Kula (The Clock Tower) is one of the important landmarks of Podgorica. It stands at the edge of the Stara Varos, facing the socialist apartment blocks across the street. Built in the 18th century by Adzi Pasha Osmanagic.
King Nikola Monument
On our way back we will pass by King Nikola monument, a fairly standard heroic equestrian monument, located within King’s Park. It was erected in 2006, on the Day of Podgorica’s Liberation in WWII, on a plateau opposite to the national Parliament.
Located on the corner of Njegoseva street, it portraits the famous Russian poet Pushkin reading poetry to his wife Natalija Gonchareva. After a brief photo stop at this monument, we will return to Independence Square.
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
