What to expect
The museum building was opened on 5 March 1957 (on the eve of independence day) as part of Ghana's independence celebrations. Objects in the archeology section range from the Stone Age period to the recent historical past.
Makola Market
Accra’s largest open-air market. A wide array of products is sold in the markets and its surrounding streets.
Centre for National Culture, Accra (Arts Centre) is a great outdoor market place to get souvenirs/gifts while also supporting local artists. You can watch many of them creating their crafts.It takes about 15mins to get to the craft village from the National Museum.
Independence Square (also known as "Black Star Square") is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ghana. It was built in 1961 and it contains monuments to Ghana's independence struggle, including the Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument.It takes about 5mins to get to Independence square from the craft village.
The mausoleum designed by Don Arthur houses the mortal remains of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife Fathia Nkrumah. It is meant to represent an upside-down sword which in the Akan culture is a symbol of peace. The mausoleum is clad from top to bottom with Italian marble, with a black star at its apex to symbolize unity. The interior of the Mausoleum boasts marble flooring and a mini mastaba looking marble grave marker surrounded by river-washed rocks.
