Finding Peace in the Heart of Shirakawa-go

Today, our journey in Shirakawa-go took a turn towards reflection and connection with nature. Leaving behind the iconic farmhouses for a day, we ventured into the surrounding forests and cultural centers, seeking a deeper understanding of this unique region. It was a day of quiet discoveries, delicious local flavors, and moments of family bonding that I'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yukinko. This charming little restaurant, run by two sisters who grew up in Shirakawa-go, was the perfect spot to fuel up for our adventures. The sisters were incredibly welcoming, and while they currently only offer takeout, we enjoyed some delicious dumplings and Gohei Mochi (grilled rice with sweet miso) on their terrace. It was a delightful start to the day, chatting with the locals and soaking in the morning atmosphere of the village.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Nature Forest, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty surrounding Shirakawa-go. The Hida Hakusan Shirakawa-go Recreation Forest is known for its lush beech forests and stunning waterfalls. Although we didn't make it to the Shiramizu Falls this time, I've read that the waterfall drops 67 meters and is surrounded by virgin forest. We spent hours wandering through the trails, Ama captivated by the towering trees and the sounds of the forest. Klaus, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out different species of plants and explained the local ecosystem. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me as we walked, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of our usual city life in Potsdam.

After our forest adventure, we drove to the Hida Earth Wisdom Center. This facility is dedicated to promoting the local culture and traditions of the Hida region. The center itself is quite impressive. We explored the Welcome Plaza, admiring the large panorama of the Hida region. Ama was particularly fascinated by the Astro Boy animation cell on display.

We then took some time to explore Museum Hida, which showcases furniture and crafts made in the Hida region. It was fascinating to see the intricate woodworking and learn about the craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations. Klaus, with his architect's eye, was particularly impressed by the designs and the use of local materials. The Hida Earth Wisdom Center truly gave us a deeper appreciation for the artistic heritage of this area.

Lunch was at Shiawaseya Kichibei, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. We savored every bite of the local Hida beef, a true delicacy that melts in your mouth. I always feel a sense of satisfaction when I support local businesses, especially those that are dedicated to preserving the culinary traditions of the region.

Our final stop of the day was the Kodaijin Souvenir Store. This wasn't just a quick stop for souvenirs; it was an experience in itself. The store offers a variety of local products, Hida folk crafts, and local sake. We picked up a few small gifts for friends and family back home, wanting to share a piece of Shirakawa-go with them.

For dinner, we decided to indulge in a special meal at Hakusuien. This long-standing restaurant, situated in a charming ancient house with a steep rafter roof, is known for its local cuisine made with regional specialties. We decided to try the Hoba miso wazen with Hida beef, a dish that has been a Hakusuien tradition since its opening. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the miso. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm reminded of the importance of connecting with nature and immersing ourselves in local culture. Shirakawa-go is more than just a collection of beautiful farmhouses; it's a place with a rich history, a vibrant community, and a deep connection to the land. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, and I look forward to continuing our journey tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve further into the local culture by visiting the Museum Hida and Hida-Sashiko. I'm particularly excited about Hida-Sashiko, as I've always been fascinated by traditional Japanese crafts. We'll also be having breakfast at Soba dojo Restaurant and dinner at Morizen, eager to try more local culinary delights. And perhaps Klaus and I will sneak away for a drink at Hidaji bar after Ama is asleep!

Until then, oyasumi nasai (good night) from Shirakawa-go!

P.S. I almost forgot! Today, I realized I had forgotten to pack a portable toddler bed for Ama! Luckily, she was so tired from all the walking that she fell asleep easily in our arms. I'll definitely need to remember that for future trips!
