Family Adventure in Taroudant, Morocco
Day 8: Farewell to Taroudant: Reflecting on Moroccan Charm
Saying goodbye to Taroudant after an unforgettable family adventure, filled with cultural immersion, delicious food, and cherished memories.
A Fond Farewell
Our time in Taroudant has come to an end, and as we prepare to leave, I can't help but reflect on the incredible experiences we've had. This trip, taken with my husband Klaus and our daughter Ama, has been nothing short of magical. From exploring ancient sites to savoring local cuisine, every moment has been a vibrant tapestry woven with the rich culture of Morocco. It’s amazing how a place can feel so familiar in such a short amount of time.
Our final day began, as most days here do, with the call to prayer. I’ve grown accustomed to its melodic resonance, a constant reminder of the spiritual heart of this city. After a quick shower, we headed out for breakfast at Snack Asswar. The reviews I'd read online were promising, and it didn't disappoint. It was a small, unassuming spot, but the food was bursting with flavor. I opted for a traditional Moroccan pancake, while Klaus enjoyed a hearty tagine. Ama, of course, was happy with a simple croissant. It's heartwarming to see her adapt to new tastes and experiences with such enthusiasm. The mint tea was the perfect accompaniment, its sweetness cutting through the warm morning air.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set out to explore Dar Tourkia, a place I had been particularly excited about. It was described as a beautifully restored guesthouse, and I was eager to see it for myself. As we approached, the grandeur of the building was immediately apparent. The architecture was stunning, a perfect blend of traditional Moroccan design and modern comfort. We wandered through the intricately decorated rooms, admiring the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The courtyard, with its lush greenery and serene fountain, was a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.

Next on our list was Architect Mustapha Khazaz. It turned out to be more of an amusement park than an architectural site! Ama was thrilled at the prospect of rides and games, and honestly, Klaus and I were just as excited. The park was a vibrant mix of locals and tourists, all eager to enjoy a day of fun. We spent hours laughing, playing, and simply soaking in the lively atmosphere. Ama was particularly fond of the carousel, while Klaus and I enjoyed a thrilling ride on the Ferris wheel, which offered breathtaking views of the city.

For lunch, we decided to try Snack Jad, another local favorite. This place had a more casual vibe, perfect for a quick and tasty meal. I ordered a tagine, while Klaus opted for grilled chicken. Ama, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of both. The food was simple but delicious, and the prices were incredibly reasonable. It was a great spot to refuel before continuing our exploration.

After lunch, I was keen to do some last-minute shopping. We ventured into CHHIPA CHOP, a clothing store I'd spotted earlier in the week. I was hoping to find a few souvenirs to take back home, and I wasn't disappointed. The store was filled with colorful textiles, traditional clothing, and unique handcrafted items. I ended up buying a beautiful scarf for myself and a small djellaba for Ama. It will be lovely to remember this trip.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Al Barraq for our final dinner in Taroudant. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and we were eager to try it out. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a variety of dishes, including couscous, tagine, and grilled meats. The food was absolutely divine, a perfect representation of Moroccan cuisine. We savored every bite, knowing that this would be our last taste of Taroudant for a while. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey.

As we sat there, reflecting on our time in Taroudant, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. This trip had been more than just a vacation; it had been an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a new culture, to connect with local communities, and to create lasting memories with my family. I thought about how much Ama had grown during this trip. She’s always been curious, but seeing her interact with new people, try new foods, and embrace new experiences has been truly remarkable. It reinforces my belief in the importance of travel, especially for young children. It opens their minds, broadens their perspectives, and fosters a sense of empathy and understanding.
Klaus, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the intricate designs and sustainable building practices we observed throughout the city. He’s already brainstorming ways to incorporate some of these elements into his own eco-friendly housing designs back in Potsdam. It’s inspiring to see how travel can spark creativity and innovation.
For me, as a software developer working on AI applications for sustainable agriculture, this trip has reinforced the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism. I’ve seen firsthand how tourism can benefit local communities, providing economic opportunities and preserving traditional crafts and practices. It’s crucial that we approach travel with a sense of responsibility, ensuring that our presence has a positive impact on the places we visit.
As we prepare to leave Taroudant, I know that we will carry the memories of this trip with us always. The vibrant colors, the exotic aromas, the warm hospitality – all of these will remain etched in our minds. And though we may be leaving Morocco, I know that a part of us will always remain here, in this enchanting city that has captured our hearts.
Tomorrow, we head back to Berlin, filled with stories to tell and experiences to share. Until next time, Taroudant, shukran bezef (thank you very much) for the memories.
I am so glad we chose to stay in local guesthouses during this trip. It allowed us to connect with the community on a deeper level. We shared meals with our hosts, learned about their daily lives, and even participated in local festivals. These are the kinds of experiences that you just can’t get from staying in a generic hotel. I will try to do this more when traveling.
Looking ahead, I am already planning our next family adventure. I am thinking of exploring Ghana, my country of birth, and sharing its rich culture and natural beauty with Klaus and Ama. I want Ama to connect with her roots and learn about her heritage firsthand. I believe it’s important for her to have a strong sense of identity and to appreciate the diversity of the world.
For now, though, it’s time to pack our bags, say our goodbyes, and prepare for the journey home. Taroudant, you will be missed. But I know that we will return someday, to once again immerse ourselves in your magic and charm.
