Today in Marrakech was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, art, and a dash of modern-day zest. Venturing out on my own, I was eager to delve deeper into the city's cultural heart, a mission that proved to be both enriching and exhilarating. From the serene halls of Bahia Palace to the lively atmosphere of a rooftop bar, Marrakech offered a sensory feast that I was more than happy to indulge in.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Jardin Restaurant Marrakech Medina. The restaurant was indeed a little oasis, a green-on-green tiled riad, with banana trees filling the courtyard. It was a lovely and calm place to start the day. After a quick bite of traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea, I set off to explore the architectural marvels that awaited me.

First on my list was the Bahia Palace. The palace was commissioned by Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed ben Moussa in the late 19th century, and intended to be the most impressive palace of all time. As I wandered through its intricately decorated courtyards and rooms, I couldn't help but marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship and the sheer opulence of the place. The play of light and shadow in the courtyards, the intricate stucco work, and the vibrant zellij tiles transported me back to a bygone era of sultans and viziers. Though the rooms were mostly empty now, that made it easier to appreciate the architecture and the beautiful painted wood doors and ceilings.

Next, I ventured to the Saadian Tombs, a hidden gem rediscovered in 1917. These tombs, dating back to the 16th century, are the final resting place of members of the Saadian dynasty. Stepping into the mausoleums, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere and the stunning beauty of the decorations. The Hall of Twelve Columns, with its delicate cedarwood dome and walls adorned with Quranic inscriptions, was particularly awe-inspiring. It was a humbling experience to stand in a place that held so much history and to reflect on the lives of those who came before me. The storks nesting at the entrance were an added bonus! It was easy to imagine the Saadian dynasty in its Golden Age.

My historical immersion continued at the Dar Si Said Museum, housed in a 19th-century palace. The museum holds a wide variety of objects, many from the southern regions of Morocco. Until recently the museum's exhibits focused on Moroccan wooden art and objects. I was particularly drawn to the displays of traditional Moroccan carpets and textiles, which showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the carpets were a testament to the skill and artistry of the local weavers. The palace itself was impressive, with a grand reception hall and a riad garden. I learned that the museum had been damaged in the September 2023 earthquake and was closed for repairs, so I felt lucky to have been able to visit it.

For lunch, I decided to try La Table Ocre, a restaurant that promised an authentic Moroccan dining experience. I savored a flavorful chicken tagine, slow-cooked with aromatic spices and served with fluffy couscous. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventures. The tagine was absolutely delicious! It was the perfect opportunity to try the traditional Moroccan dish.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Le Salama Sky-bar, a rooftop bar known for its stunning views of the city. As I sipped on a refreshing cocktail, I watched the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors, with the silhouettes of the Koutoubia Mosque and the Atlas Mountains in the distance. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with music and laughter filling the air. I even caught a glimpse of a belly dancing performance, which added to the exotic ambiance.

Reflecting on the day, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of Marrakech. From the historical landmarks to the culinary delights and the vibrant nightlife, this city has something to offer everyone. It was a day of contrasts, a blend of the ancient and the modern, the serene and the lively. And as I prepare for another day of exploration tomorrow, I can't help but feel excited about what awaits me in this enchanting city. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Madrasa Ben Youssef, the House of Photography in Marrakech, and the Museum of Women - Women's Museum. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at 33 RUE MAJORELLE.



Before heading back to Riad Mille et une Nuits, I enjoyed a delightful dinner at Pepe Nero. The restaurant offered both Italian and Moroccan cuisines. I opted for the Moroccan fare, and was not disappointed. The cool staff made the place wonderful, and the atmosphere was lovely.

As I settle in for the night, I'm already anticipating the adventures tomorrow will bring. I'm falling in love with Marrakech, and I'm so glad I decided to embark on this solo journey. There's something incredibly liberating about exploring a new place on your own terms, and I can't wait to see what else this magical city has in store for me. It's a far cry from Potsdam, but sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what one needs to spark new inspiration and appreciate the beauty of the world. Perhaps Klaus and Ama would enjoy this city as well. I'll have to bring them back someday.
