Coastal Lighthouses and Culinary Wonders

Today marked the sixth day of our Ise Shima adventure, and it was filled with exploring coastal landmarks and indulging in the local culinary scene. Aisha and I set out to discover the region's lighthouses and savor the unique flavors that Ise Shima has to offer. It was a day of breathtaking views, delightful meals, and serene moments by the sea.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Toufuya. The restaurant is nestled along the clear waters of the Isuzu River, under a grand ginkgo tree. I opted for their specialty, smooth, silky tofu, while Aisha enjoyed the fresh natural anago (saltwater eel). The striking wooden architecture of the building added to the charm, embodying traditional Japanese construction techniques. It was a delightful way to start the day, surrounded by such serene beauty. The tofu was so creamy, it practically melted in my mouth, a testament to the chef's skill. Aisha, ever the adventurous one, enjoyed the anago, remarking on its delicate flavor and perfect preparation.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Daiozaki Lighthouse. The drive itself was a treat, with scenic views of the Ise Shima National Park. As we approached the lighthouse, the chalk-colored building stood out against the backdrop of the azure sea. From the observation deck at the top, the views were simply breathtaking. We could see Subanohama Beach, Mugisaki Lighthouse, and even the Anorisaki Lighthouse in the distance. The Enshunada Sea and Kumanonada Sea stretched out before us, creating a mesmerizing panorama. I took several photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene, but no picture could truly do it justice.

The small shops lining the road to the lighthouse were also a delight, selling souvenirs such as locally cultured pearls and dried seafood. Aisha, of course, couldn't resist browsing, and she ended up buying a beautiful pearl necklace as a memento of our trip. I picked up some dried squid, a snack I remember fondly from my childhood in Nigeria, though this was definitely fresher than what I was used to. It's funny how certain tastes can transport you back in time.

Next on our itinerary was the Anorisaki Lighthouse. This lighthouse has a unique rectangular shape and overlooks Matoya Bay and the Kumanonada Sea. The surrounding area is perfect for walking and picnicking, and we took advantage of the opportunity to stretch our legs and enjoy the coastal scenery. The 16-kilometer nature trail that starts at the lighthouse beckoned, but we decided to save that for another day. As we stood there, gazing out at the sea, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It's moments like these that make traveling so worthwhile.

The journey is the destination, and every moment is a memory in the making.

For lunch, we had made reservations at Ama Hut Satoumian, eager to experience the unique dining tradition. This was something I was particularly excited about. I had read about the Ama divers, women who free dive to collect shellfish and seaweed, and I was fascinated by their way of life. The Ama Hut is where they rest after their dives, warming themselves by a fire and sharing stories.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by the friendly staff and led to a cozy hut. Inside, a charcoal grill was already fired up, and the aroma of grilling seafood filled the air. We sat down at a low table, and soon we were joined by one of the Ama divers. She was a woman with a warm smile and a wealth of knowledge about the sea and its bounty.

She shared stories of her life as an Ama diver, the challenges she faced, and the rewards she reaped. It was fascinating to hear about her experiences, and I was struck by her deep connection to the ocean. She explained how the culture of Ama divers is a significant part of Japan's heritage. It’s amazing to think that this tradition has been going on for hundreds of years.

The seafood, of course, was the highlight of the meal. We feasted on freshly caught turban shells, squid, and dried fish, all grilled to perfection. The miso soup with local aosa seaweed was also a standout, its rich flavor a testament to the quality of the ingredients. Aisha particularly enjoyed the tekonezushi, a local dish of Shima, which is vinegared rice seasoned with soy sauce and topped with bonito fillets. It was a truly unique culinary experience, one that we won't soon forget.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Auberge Yusura for dinner. This charming inn is known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine, and we were eager to sample their offerings. The inn itself was beautiful, with traditional Japanese architecture and serene gardens. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The kaiseki dinner was a work of art, each dish carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle yet complex, showcasing the best of local ingredients. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every bite was a delight. The service was impeccable, the staff attending to our every need with grace and professionalism. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and culinary indulgence.

Before retiring for the night, we decided to check out La Mer the Classic, a bar known for its classic ambiance. The bar was located in the Shima Kanko Hotel. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails, savoring the quiet atmosphere and reflecting on the day's adventures. Aisha and I chatted about our favorite moments, the stunning views from the lighthouses, the fascinating stories from the Ama diver, and the exquisite flavors of the kaiseki dinner.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. Ise Shima is a truly special place, a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and culinary delights. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kazahinomi-no-Miya Shrine and Kotai Jingu (Ise Jingu Naiku, Inner Sanctuary). I’m particularly looking forward to visiting Kotai Jingu, as I understand it's one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan. Aisha is keen to visit Hamaco Pearl Toba, a pearl shop, which I am sure will be another highlight for her. For dinner, we are booked at Sushi Yutaka Zen, which I am told serves some of the best sushi in the region. It promises to be another day filled with exploration and discovery, and I can't wait to see what Ise Shima has in store for us.

I am also aware that the Shikinen Sengu is scheduled to begin this month. This major event, involving the rebuilding of Ise Jingu every 20 years, is a unique opportunity to witness Japanese tradition and sustainability. The Yamaguchi-sai ceremony, the first rite of Shikinen Sengu, is set to take place this month, praying for the safety of the timber used for the shrine. It would be wonderful if we could witness some part of this historic event during our stay.
