Day 5: Spiritual Reflections and Seaside Wonders in Ise Shima
Discover the serene beauty of Ise Shima with a visit to Sengukan Museum and the iconic Meoto Iwa, creating unforgettable memories.
A Day of Heritage and Harmony
Today was a day of deep reflection and appreciation for the cultural and natural wonders of Ise Shima. Aisha and I immersed ourselves in the history of the Ise Grand Shrine and marveled at the beauty of the Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks). It was a day filled with peace, delicious food, and memorable moments.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ama Hut Satoumian. The experience was truly unique, as we sat in a traditional ama hut, sharing stories and laughter with the ama divers themselves. The freshly grilled seafood, caught just hours before, was incredibly flavorful. Aisha particularly enjoyed the turban shells, while I savored the delicate taste of the abalone. It was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into the local culture and a connection with the people who call this beautiful region home. The experience reminded me of the importance of preserving traditions and honoring the natural resources that sustain communities. I even tried some squid, which to my surprise, was very tender.
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.
After breakfast, we visited the Sengukan Museum. The museum provided a fascinating insight into the Shikinen Sengu, the ritual reconstruction of the Ise Grand Shrine that takes place every 20 years. The exhibits were incredibly detailed, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and the deep spiritual significance of this ancient tradition. I was particularly impressed by the full-scale replica of a section of the Geku main shrine. It gave me a sense of the grandeur and the meticulous attention to detail that goes into rebuilding the shrine. Aisha, with her keen interest in cultural preservation, was captivated by the displays of sacred adornments and treasures offered to the deities. The museum visit deepened our understanding of the Ise Grand Shrine and its importance to Japanese culture and spirituality. It’s amazing to think that this tradition has been upheld for over 1,300 years.

For lunch, we headed to Yashiro, a seafood restaurant known for its incredibly fresh dishes. The owner, who is also a fisherman, catches the seafood in the morning and prepares it with great care. We indulged in the Ise Ebi Tairyodon, a rice bowl topped with a whole Ise lobster. The lobster was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the presentation was stunning. Aisha opted for the Tairyodon, which was overflowing with seasonal seafood. The restaurant's location near the Isobue Misaki Observation Deck offered a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and Ago Bay. It was the perfect setting to enjoy a delicious meal and reflect on the day's experiences.
In the afternoon, we made our way to Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks). As we approached the shore, the iconic sight of the two rocks connected by a shimenawa rope came into view. The rocks symbolize the union of Izanagi and Izanami, the deities who created the Japanese archipelago. The scene was both beautiful and serene, with the sound of the waves providing a calming backdrop. We walked along the beach, taking in the view and reflecting on the symbolism of the rocks. Aisha and I held hands, appreciating the bond we share and the commitment we have made to each other. It was a truly special moment, made even more meaningful by the beautiful natural surroundings.

Before dinner, we took some time to explore the Ise Meotoiwa Shopping Plaza. The plaza offered a variety of local crafts, souvenirs, and snacks. Aisha was drawn to the pearl jewelry, a specialty of the region, while I was fascinated by the Japanese knives. We sampled some local treats, including the kawausokun-yaki, a pancake filled with azuki bean paste. We also enjoyed the experience of seeing the lanterns hanging from the ceiling of the main hall. It was a fun and lively atmosphere, and we enjoyed browsing the shops and soaking in the local culture.

Our day concluded with a memorable dinner at La Mer the Classic. This French restaurant, located in the Shima Kanko Hotel, is renowned for its seafood-based French cuisine. The elegant dining room, with its glittering chandeliers and stunning views of Ago Bay, set the stage for a truly special meal. We indulged in the tasting menu, which featured dishes such as abalone steak and Ise prawn cream soup. The combination of local seafood and classic French techniques was exquisite. It was a fitting end to a day filled with cultural immersion and natural beauty.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Daiozaki Lighthouse and Anorisaki Lighthouse [If tomorrow is the last day of the trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Toufuya and lunch at Ama Hut Satoumian, and ending the day with drinks at La Mer the Classic [If tomorrow is the last day of the trip, merge in “Trip end”].
