Join Abimbola and Aisha as they explore the spiritual heart of Ise Shima, visiting ancient shrines and savoring local delicacies.
A Day of Divine Encounters
Today, Aisha and I delved into the heart of Ise Shima, seeking to understand the spiritual significance of this region. Our journey was a blend of serene contemplation and cultural immersion, offering a deeper connection to Japan's rich heritage. From the tranquil inner sanctum of Kotai Jingu to the captivating shores of Futamiokitama Shrine, every moment was filled with profound beauty and reflection.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Shima Mediterranean Village. The vibrant atmosphere and the delicious Mediterranean-inspired cuisine were the perfect start to our exploration. It felt somewhat surreal to be enjoying such a meal in the heart of Japan, but the fusion of cultures was a welcome surprise. The colorful buildings and the sea view gave us a feeling of being transported to Europe.
Fueled and ready, we set off to Kotai Jingu, also known as Ise Jingu Naiku or the Inner Sanctuary. As we approached, the air grew still, filled with a palpable sense of reverence. The towering ancient trees formed a natural cathedral, their leaves rustling in hushed whispers. Crossing the Uji Bridge felt like stepping into another world, leaving behind the mundane and entering a realm of the sacred.
The shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess, and is considered one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan. The main buildings, with their simple yet elegant design, exuded a timeless beauty. I learned that every 20 years, the shrines are rebuilt from scratch in a tradition called Shikinen Sengu, embodying the Shinto belief in renewal and the impermanence of all things. The next rebuilding is scheduled for 2033. It's quite amazing to think about the level of dedication and craftsmanship that goes into such a massive undertaking.
As we walked through the grounds, we came across the Isuzugawa River, where visitors can purify themselves using the sacred water. Aisha and I cupped our hands and splashed the cool, clear water on our faces, feeling refreshed and cleansed. The act was a simple yet powerful reminder of the importance of purity and reverence in Shinto beliefs. Photography was restricted beyond a certain point, adding to the sense of mystery and respect for the divine. We spent a good amount of time exploring the various structures within the complex, including the Kaguraden and Aramatsurinomiya. Each site held its own unique energy, inviting contemplation and reflection.
Visiting Kotai Jingu was more than just sightseeing; it was a journey into the soul of Japan, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and tradition.
Leaving Kotai Jingu, we drove towards Futamiokitama Shrine, drawn by the allure of the Meoto Iwa, or Wedded Rocks. As we approached the coast, the salty breeze and the sound of crashing waves filled the air. The shrine itself was smaller than Kotai Jingu but possessed a unique charm.

It's known for its connection to Izanagi and Izanami, the deities central to the Japanese creation myth, and is a popular spot for couples seeking blessings for their marriage.
The Meoto Iwa were a sight to behold. Two large rocks, one taller than the other, stood in the sea, connected by a thick Shimenawa rope. They symbolize the union of husband and wife, a testament to enduring love and partnership. The scene was incredibly picturesque, with the waves crashing against the rocks and the sun glinting off the water. I could see why it's such a popular spot for photographers. We watched as other couples took photos, their faces filled with joy and hope. It was a heartwarming sight.
Aisha and I took a moment to appreciate the view, reflecting on our own journey together. Being here with her made the experience even more special. We walked along the shore, collecting seashells and enjoying the feel of the sand between our toes. The air was fresh and invigorating, and the sound of the waves was incredibly soothing. I even spotted a few frog statues around the shrine, which I later learned are associated with good fortune and safe return. There was also a Mangan Frog, which is said to make wishes come true if you pour water on it.
For lunch, we had reservations at Toufuya, a restaurant renowned for its exquisite tofu dishes. As a software engineer, I appreciate the precision and artistry that goes into crafting a perfect line of code, but I must admit, the artistry displayed in the presentation of the tofu was on another level. The restaurant itself was beautiful, built in a traditional style without using a single nail. The view of the Isuzu River added to the serene ambiance. We opted for the yudofu-zen and yosedofu-zen sets, eager to taste the different textures and flavors of the tofu. The tofu was incredibly smooth and creamy, each bite melting in our mouths. The subtle flavors of the soybeans were enhanced by the delicate dashi broth and the accompanying side dishes. It was a truly delightful culinary experience, showcasing the versatility and elegance of Japanese cuisine.

In the late afternoon, we decided to explore a local bar, Ise Kadoya Beer, to sample some of the region's craft beers. Ise Kadoya Beer is a well-regarded brewery with a history of winning international awards. The bar had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with a wide selection of beers on tap. I opted for their IPA, while Aisha chose a lighter ale. We sat at the bar, chatting with the friendly staff and enjoying the local flavors. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of spiritual exploration.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Auberge Yusura for dinner. This charming retreat promised a haven of relaxation and luxury, and it certainly delivered. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was serene and inviting. We enjoyed a multi-course meal that highlighted the local ingredients and culinary traditions of Ise Shima. From the fresh seafood to the locally sourced vegetables, every dish was a testament to the region's bounty. The highlight of the meal was the abalone steak, which was cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths.
