Exploring the Cultural Riches of Ise Shima with Aisha
Day 3: A Day of Thrills and Views in Ise Shima
Experience the excitement of Shima Spain Village and the breathtaking views from Asama Mountain in Ise Shima with Abimbola and Aisha.
Spanish Flair and Mountain Air
Today was a delightful blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty here in Ise Shima. Aisha and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to explore a unique theme park and a scenic mountain viewpoint. It’s amazing how much variety this region offers, and I was eager to capture it all through my lens.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yashiro. The Japanese meal was a luxurious spread of local delicacies, including dashi-wrapped eggs with seaweed and miso soup with spiny lobster. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
Adventures at Shima Spain Village
After breakfast, we headed to Shima Spain Village, a place that promised a taste of Spain in the heart of Japan. I must admit, the idea seemed a bit surreal, but I was intrigued. As we approached, the vibrant architecture and lively music transported us to a different world. The park is themed to Spain, with Don Quixote characters serving as mascots. It’s a bit strange and cool at the same time.

The park was alive with activity. We started with the parade show at Plaza de Cibeles, Nuevo Progresso 'Adelante'. The costumes were gorgeous, and the energy of the performers was infectious. Aisha was particularly captivated by the flamenco dancers.
Sometimes, the most unexpected combinations create the most memorable experiences.
We then explored the various attractions. The Xavier Museum, resembling a castle from Super Mario Bros., offered a glimpse into Spanish culture and the life of Francis Xavier. We watched a musical inspired by the Patio Festival in Spain at Patio del Canto ~Dulcinea's Secret Garden~. The park has several dark rides that are not standard dark rides that most parks have. We also enjoyed a water ride called Splash Montserrat. The park is super well themed and really does take you back to Spain.
One of the highlights was the Gran Montserrat coaster. I rode alone in the front row, and it was a thrilling experience. The coaster shakes violently from side to side and hits your head against the safety bar, so it hurts a bit. It was half fun and half painful. Aisha, however, preferred the tamer small train that goes around this area.
We also took some time to shop for souvenirs. Aisha found a beautiful fan, while I picked up a small Don Quixote figurine to remind me of this unique experience. There were many original characters from Shima Spain Village. The dance choreography is intense, and the show is longer than I expected. Everyone's physical strength is amazing. There was a character who continued to dance for three songs in a row, and I was impressed.
Scenic Heights at Asama Mountain View Point
After a fun-filled afternoon at Shima Spain Village, we decided to embrace the natural beauty of Ise Shima. Our next destination was the Asama Mountain View Point, located about halfway along the Ise-Shima Skyline. The Ise-Shima Skyline is a 16.3-kilometer toll road connecting Ise and Toba. As we drove up the Ise-Shima Skyline, the views became increasingly stunning. The road itself is known as the “driveway in the sky”.

The Asama Mountain View Point is at the top of the mountain. At 555 meters, Mount Asama is the highest peak in Ise-Shima National Park. The parking area was conveniently located, and we were immediately greeted by panoramic vistas of Ise Bay. From this vantage point, we could see not only Toba City but also the islands floating in the grand Ise Bay and even the distant Atsumi Peninsula.
There's an awesome foot bath with amazing view. The healing effect of the bath is said to bring peace of mind. I dipped my feet into the ashiyu foot bath, enjoying the warmth and the incredible panorama. Aisha and I took some photos by the bright red “Heavenly Post Box,” a popular spot for sending letters.
Pearls and Seafood Delights
Before dinner, Aisha wanted to visit Amano Pearl, a local shop known for its high-quality pearl jewelry. Ise Shima is the home of pearls. Aisha found a beautiful Akoya pearl necklace, a perfect memento of our trip. I learned that Ise-Shima was the first place in the world to successfully cultivate pearls.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Matoyakaki Terrace for dinner. This restaurant specializes in oysters from Matoya Bay, and I was eager to try their famous “kankan-yaki”. Matoya oysters are cooked in a way that is unique to Ise-Shima, which is to kankan-yaki them in a kettle so as not to lose their flavor. The oysters were plump, juicy, and bursting with flavor.

Aisha, who isn't usually a fan of oysters, was pleasantly surprised by the raw oysters. Oysters growing in the Matoya Bay are characterized by their lack of odor, harshness, and bitterness usually characteristic of oysters. We also tried the KakiFry - Fried Oysters. These fried oysters opened on the day are served without any sauce, to fully feel the taste of Matoya oysters. The restaurant offered a relaxing meal with a view of the sea in the birthplace of oyster farming in Mie Prefecture.
Reflections on a Fulfilling Day
As we headed back, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the whimsical charm of Shima Spain Village to the awe-inspiring views from Asama Mountain, Ise Shima had once again exceeded my expectations. The blend of cultural experiences and natural beauty is truly unique, and I feel grateful to share it all with Aisha.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Izawanomiya and HINJITSUKAN, continuing our exploration of Ise Shima's cultural and historical sites. We'll also be trying out Restaurant La Mer for breakfast, Satonaka Sushi for lunch, and Ise Kadoya Beer for dinner. And perhaps a stop at MOKU ISESHIMA for a nightcap. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this beautiful region.
Local events are always a plus, and while we didn't specifically attend any today, I did notice that the Okihiki Festival launch party is also happening today. It's wonderful to see the community come together to celebrate their traditions.
Back at our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of fulfillment. This journey with Aisha is not just about seeing new places, but about creating lasting memories together. And as I close my eyes tonight, I know that tomorrow will bring even more adventures in Ise Shima.
I am glad I remembered to pack my camera, travel guide, comfortable walking shoes, traditional Nigerian attire, and travel journal [from my trip essentials]. Although, I wish I hadn’t forgotten the umbrella and portable charger [as listed in my forgotten trip essentials].
