Homeward Bound: Reflecting on Our Nigerian Adventure

As our family adventure in Gashaka Gumti National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment for having explored such a remarkable part of Nigeria, a tinge of sadness that our time in the wilderness is over, and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for the memories we've created. This trip was more than just a vacation; it was a journey of rediscovery, connection, and appreciation for the natural beauty of our homeland.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast, a simple meal made special by the sounds of the awakening forest around us. Aisha prepared some of the remaining yam porridge, a family favorite that always brings a smile to Tunde's face. Funke, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the sunrise, determined to capture every last moment of Gashaka's beauty. I savored my cup of tea, reflecting on the past eleven days and how quickly they had flown by. It felt like just yesterday we were landing in Abuja, eager to begin our adventure. Now, here we were, packing up our gear, ready to head back to the city.

Before leaving Gashaka Gumti National Park, we took one last walk through a familiar trail. The crisp morning air was filled with the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. Tunde, with his keen eyes, spotted a group of monkeys swinging through the trees, their playful antics a reminder of the vibrant wildlife we were so fortunate to witness. Funke, armed with her camera, captured their every move. Aisha and I walked hand in hand, enjoying the peacefulness of the forest, a stark contrast to the bustling city life we would soon return to. It was a moment of serene contentment, a perfect ending to our wilderness experience.

The journey may be ending, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Our drive back to Abuja was filled with lively conversation and shared memories. Tunde recounted his favorite moments from our hikes, while Funke eagerly edited her photos, excited to share them with her friends back home. Aisha and I reminisced about the challenges and triumphs of navigating the park, the unexpected encounters with wildlife, and the simple joys of camping under the stars. We laughed, we sang, and we reveled in the collective experience that had brought us even closer as a family.

As we approached Abuja, the landscape gradually transformed from lush greenery to urban sprawl. The change was jarring, a stark reminder of the world we were re-entering. Yet, even as we braced ourselves for the city's hustle and bustle, we carried with us the tranquility and serenity of Gashaka Gumti National Park, a sanctuary that would forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Once we arrived in Abuja, our first order of business was to freshen up and prepare for a day of city exploration. We checked into a comfortable hotel, a welcome change from our camping gear. After a quick shower and change of clothes, we were ready to immerse ourselves in Abuja's vibrant culture and culinary scene.

For breakfast, we decided to try BluCabana Restaurant & Cafe, a spot I had read about online. The restaurant's Mediterranean-inspired menu was a refreshing change from our usual Nigerian fare. We enjoyed a delicious spread of pastries, fresh fruit, and strong coffee, fueling up for a day of sightseeing. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting, a perfect place to start our Abuja adventure.

After breakfast, we headed to Naija Gift Land, a shop known for its authentic Nigerian souvenirs and handcrafted treasures. I wanted to find some special mementos to bring back to Ottawa, reminders of our incredible journey. The shop was a treasure trove of colorful textiles, intricate beadwork, and carved wooden sculptures. Funke was particularly drawn to the vibrant Ankara fabrics, while Tunde admired the detailed craftsmanship of the wooden masks. Aisha found a beautiful piece of jewelry, a delicate silver necklace with a traditional Nigerian design. I purchased a few small carvings and some local spices, hoping to recreate some of the flavors of Nigeria back in Canada.

For lunch, we decided to try Zuma Grill, a restaurant known for its delicious grilled dishes and lively atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. We ordered a variety of grilled meats and seafood, savoring the smoky flavors and spicy sauces. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was a perfect spot to refuel after our shopping excursion.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to explore some of Abuja's cultural landmarks. We visited the National Mosque of Nigeria, a stunning architectural masterpiece that showcases the country's rich Islamic heritage. The mosque's golden dome and towering minarets were a sight to behold. We also visited the National Christian Centre, an equally impressive structure that reflects Nigeria's diverse religious landscape. The center's stained-glass windows and soaring arches were truly awe-inspiring.

For our final dinner in Nigeria, I wanted to treat my family to a special meal. I chose Cilantro Abuja, a restaurant known for its elegant ambiance and exquisite cuisine. The restaurant's menu featured a fusion of Nigerian and international flavors, a perfect reflection of Abuja's cosmopolitan culture. We savored each dish, appreciating the artistry and skill of the chefs. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey through Nigeria.

As we sat around the table, sharing stories and laughter, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This trip to Gashaka Gumti National Park had been more than just a vacation; it had been a transformative experience for all of us. We had reconnected with our Nigerian roots, discovered the beauty of our homeland, and created memories that would last a lifetime. For Aisha, it was a well-deserved break from her demanding work as a nurse. For Tunde and Funke, it was an opportunity to appreciate Nigeria’s rich biodiversity. And for me, it was a chance to share my love for Nigeria with my family, to show them the places and experiences that had shaped me into the person I am today.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Ottawa, carrying with us not only souvenirs and photographs but also a renewed sense of appreciation for our heritage and a deeper connection to each other. As I reflect on our adventure, I am reminded of the importance of taking time to explore the world, to immerse ourselves in different cultures, and to create lasting memories with our loved ones. Nigeria, with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

This trip has reinforced my belief that travel is more than just seeing new places; it's about opening our minds, expanding our horizons, and connecting with the world around us. And as we prepare to return to our daily lives in Ottawa, I know that the memories and experiences we gained in Gashaka Gumti National Park will continue to inspire and enrich us for years to come. It's time to go home, but a piece of my heart will always remain in Nigeria.
