Day 9: Chasing Waterfalls and Serene Gardens: A Day of Nature's Wonders in Yakushima
Discover Yakushima's enchanting Ryujin Falls, explore the serene Botanic Gardens, and immerse in the island's unique artistry.
Nature's Embrace: Waterfalls, Gardens, and Island Art
Today was a symphony of nature's finest compositions here in Yakushima. From the cascading beauty of Ryujin Falls to the tranquil embrace of the Botanic Gardens, the island revealed its artistry in every corner. It was a day of exploration and reflection, reminding me of the simple joys that travel brings.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. I opted for the local specialty, a grilled fish set, which was both delicious and filling. Fuelled up, I set out to visit Ryujin Falls. The journey itself was an experience, taking a bus towards Hara from Yakushima's main bus terminal. The ride, lasting about 40 minutes, offered glimpses of the island's verdant landscapes. From the Hara bus stop, it was a pleasant kilometer's walk to the falls. I decided against renting a car for the entire trip, preferring to rely on local transport and the occasional taxi. It allows me to connect more with the place and its people, and today was no exception. The walk was refreshing, with the air crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the forest.
As I approached Ryujin Falls, the sound of rushing water grew louder, creating a sense of anticipation. Nestled in the heart of Yakushima, the falls are renowned for their spectacular views and tranquil ambiance. The water cascaded down the rugged cliffs, a magnificent display of nature's power. I spent a good hour simply taking in the scene, capturing photographs from different angles. The rainy season, thankfully subdued today, had amplified the water flow, making the falls even more mesmerizing. The surrounding lush forests added to the enchanting atmosphere, making it an ideal retreat.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
After the falls, I headed to the Yakushima Botanic Gardens. Located in the Mugio District, the gardens are a sprawling sanctuary of native and exotic flora. The gardens feature an herb garden, a tropical fruit orchard, and even a butterfly conservatory. It was a rare chance to see tropical fruits growing in their natural habitat. The observatory offered a stunning view of the coastal Toroki Falls and Mt. Mocchomu. I wandered through the winding paths, encountering vibrant blooms, towering trees, and tranquil ponds. The air was filled with the rich scents and sounds of nature, a welcome change from the city's hustle.

One of the highlights was the shop selling fresh-squeezed fruit juices made with local fruits. I tried the Tankan citrus juice, a burst of refreshing flavor that perfectly captured the essence of Yakushima. I also learned about the island's unique biodiversity and conservation efforts from the knowledgeable staff, who were eager to share their insights. It's fascinating how Yakushima manages to maintain such a rich ecosystem, a testament to the island's commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the local crafts scene. Yakushima is known for its artistry, inspired by the island's natural environment. I visited YAKUSHIMA BLESS, a shop that showcases local artistry, traditional crafts, and unique souvenirs. I was particularly drawn to the Yakusugi wood crafts, made from reclaimed Yakusugi cedar. The felling of these ancient trees is prohibited, but the fallen trees, known as domaiboku, are harvested to create beautiful artifacts. The high resin content of the wood preserves it in the damp forest, giving it a unique character.

I also learned about Yaku-deer leather products, a recent addition to the island's crafts scene. The tanned deerskins are incredibly soft and are made into key rings, wallets, and bags. It's a sustainable way to utilize the island's resources, and the products are both beautiful and functional. I picked up a small Yakusugi key ring and a Yaku-deer leather coin purse as souvenirs, reminders of my time here.
For lunch, I stopped at Kamogawa Restaurant, known for its authentic Japanese flavors. I tried the local set meal, which included flying fish sashimi and a variety of small dishes. The flying fish, or tobiuo, is a Yakushima specialty, and the sashimi was incredibly fresh and flavorful. It was a delightful culinary experience, showcasing the island's rich seafood culture.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to At Pesca for dinner. Located near the coast, the restaurant offered stunning views of the sunset over the ocean. I enjoyed a seafood pasta dish, savoring the fresh flavors and the tranquil atmosphere. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves created a perfect backdrop for a relaxing meal. I thought of Aisha and the kids, wishing they could be here to share this moment with me. Perhaps one day, we'll return to Yakushima together.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Yakushima. I plan to visit the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato” to sample more of the island's tropical fruits. I am also hoping to learn more about the local culture at the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. In the evening, I intend to unwind at Cafe&Bar RainTree, reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had here. This trip has been a reminder of the beauty and serenity that can be found in nature, a source of inspiration for my blog and a chance to reconnect with myself. As I prepare to leave this enchanted island, I carry with me a sense of gratitude and a renewed appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Yakushima has a tradition of mountain worship, with locals making pilgrimages to offer gifts to the mountain gods. I feel like my time here has been a personal pilgrimage of sorts, a journey to connect with nature and find inner peace. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique culture and to share it with you all.
The weather in Yakushima in July is generally warm and humid, with temperatures hovering around 27°C. Rainfall is common, but the forests thrive in this environment, creating lush and vibrant landscapes. Today, the weather was kind, with periods of sunshine interspersed with gentle rain. It was the perfect setting for exploring the island's natural wonders.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Yakushima has a way of slowing down time, allowing you to appreciate the small things. The sound of the waterfall, the scent of the flowers, the taste of the fresh juice – these are the moments that make travel so rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this enchanted island and to share it with you all. As I prepare for my final day here, I carry with me a sense of peace and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of nature. Yakushima, you have captured my heart.
I am already looking forward to sharing my final reflections on this incredible journey. Until then, stay tuned and keep exploring! Perhaps my next adventure will be somewhere closer to home, exploring the hiking trails of Gatineau Park with Aisha. Or maybe we'll venture further afield, seeking out new cultural experiences and natural wonders together.
