Giants of the Forest

Today, I embarked on a journey deep into the heart of Yakushima, a day dedicated to communing with the ancient spirits of the forest. It was a day of quiet reflection, a chance to lose myself among the towering cedars and listen to the whispers of centuries past. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the profound beauty and humbling power of nature with all of you.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Mare, a charming Italian restaurant near the airport. It felt a bit strange to start my day with Italian so far from home, but I must admit, the food was excellent. The chef clearly had a passion for using local ingredients, and it was a delightful way to fuel up for the day's adventures. Aisha would have loved this place; she always appreciates a good fusion of cultures and cuisines.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore the ancient cedars. The first stop was Meoto Sugi, the Husband and Wife Cedars. As I approached, I was struck by the sight of these two trees standing side-by-side, their branches intertwined high above. It was as if they were holding hands, a symbol of enduring love and partnership in the heart of the forest. It reminded me of Aisha and myself, our lives intertwined, supporting each other through every season.

I paused there for a long while, just breathing in the crisp, clean air and listening to the gentle rustling of the leaves. The forest was alive with a quiet energy, a sense of timelessness that washed over me and calmed my restless spirit. I thought about my children, Tunde and Funke, and how much they would have enjoyed this peaceful sanctuary. Perhaps one day, I'll bring them here to experience the magic of Yakushima for themselves.

In the heart of the forest, time loses its meaning, and the ancient cedars become silent witnesses to the enduring power of nature and connection.

As I continued my trek, I made my way to Daio Sugi, the Great King Cedar. This ancient giant stood tall and proud, a testament to the resilience of nature. Standing at nearly 25 meters tall, with a circumference of over 11 meters, Daio Sugi exuded an aura of majesty and wisdom. I imagined all the seasons it had weathered, the storms it had endured, the history it had witnessed. It was a humbling experience to be in its presence, a reminder of my own insignificance in the grand scheme of things. Before the discovery of Jomon Sugi, Daio Sugi was considered the oldest and largest of its kind on the island, earning it the name 'Great King'.

The trail to these ancient trees was an experience in itself. The path wound through lush, green forests, the air thick with the scent of moss and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. Every step was a sensory delight, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us if we only take the time to notice.

Lunch was a simple affair at Shiosai, a local restaurant known for its fresh seafood. I savored the flavors of the ocean, grateful for the nourishment and the opportunity to support the local community. The tempura was exceptional, light and crispy, and the staff were warm and welcoming. It's these small moments of connection that make traveling so rewarding.

In the evening, I decided to visit the Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for dinner. This bustling market offered a wide array of local delicacies, and I was eager to sample some of the island's specialties. I settled on grilled flying fish, a local favorite, and it was a true culinary adventure. The flavors were bold and unique, a testament to the island's rich culinary heritage.

To cap off the night, I ventured to Ganta, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. I enjoyed a few local spirits, chatting with fellow travelers and locals alike. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of hiking and to soak in the local culture. The bar was open until 1 AM, which is very late by Yakushima standards. I learned about their lives, their dreams, and their connection to this magical island. It's these shared experiences that make traveling so enriching.

As I reflect on today's journey, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Yakushima has a way of stripping away the noise and distractions of modern life, leaving you with a profound appreciation for the simple beauty of nature. The ancient cedars, the lush forests, the warm hospitality of the locals – it all combines to create an experience that is both humbling and inspiring.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Ryujin Falls and the Botanic Gardens. I am particularly excited to see the falls, as I have heard they are a sight to behold. Before that, I will have breakfast at Smiley. I am also looking forward to visiting the Botanic Gardens, as I have a keen interest in botany and am eager to learn more about the unique plant life of Yakushima. And perhaps, I'll find a little something special at YAKUSHIMA BLESS to bring home as a memento of this incredible journey.

Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place that nourishes the soul, challenges the body, and inspires the mind. If you ever have the opportunity to visit, don't hesitate. It's an experience you'll never forget. This solo adventure has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with myself and with the natural world. As a software engineer in Ottawa, my days are often filled with lines of code and the hum of technology. And as a travel blogger, I am constantly seeking out new and inspiring destinations to share with my readers. Yakushima has certainly exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
