Exploring the Natural Wonders of Gran Paradiso
Day 3: A Day of Discovery in Cogne: Nature, Culture, and Culinary Delights
Explore Cogne's natural trails, cultural gems, and exquisite cuisine in Gran Paradiso. A day of wonder with Aoife in the Italian Alps.
Cogne's Charms Unveiled
Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Cogne, a charming village nestled in Gran Paradiso National Park. Aoife and I embraced a day filled with natural beauty, cultural exploration, and of course, some truly exceptional Italian cuisine. It’s days like these that remind me why we embarked on this adventure, seeking to discover hidden gems and create lasting memories together.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Sant'Orso. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the day. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of crusty bread, local cheese and strong coffee, while Aoife enjoyed a selection of pastries that were as pleasing to the eye as they were to the palate. It's always a pleasure to start the day with such authentic flavours, a taste of the region that invigorates the senses.

Fueled up, we set out to explore the Sentiero Natura Cogne, a nature trail that promised an easy yet rewarding hike through the surrounding landscapes. The trail did not disappoint. Lush greenery enveloped us as we ambled along the well-maintained path, the sounds of nature our constant companion. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. Although I do love the hustle and bustle of Dublin, there's something incredibly soothing about being surrounded by such tranquility.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
The Sentiero Natura Cogne offered stunning views of the valley, with the majestic Gran Paradiso peak looming in the distance. We paused frequently to capture photographs, trying to encapsulate the grandeur of the scenery. Aoife, ever the observant one, pointed out various species of alpine flora, her knowledge as a librarian extending beyond books and into the natural world. I was particularly fascinated by the edelweiss flowers, their delicate white petals a symbol of the Alps.
After our invigorating hike, we decided to delve into the cultural side of Cogne. Our next stop was the Fondation Grand Paradis, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the region. The foundation hosts various exhibitions and events throughout the year. We were lucky enough to catch a fascinating exhibit on the local wildlife, complete with interactive displays and informative panels. I learned a great deal about the ibex, a species of wild goat that is emblematic of Gran Paradiso National Park. It's truly inspiring to see such dedication to conservation and education.

Lunch beckoned, and we made our way to Bar à Fromage, restaurant de montagne, a charming establishment known for its exquisite cheese dishes and traditional alpine cuisine. The restaurant's cozy interior, adorned with rustic décor and vintage farming implements, created a warm and inviting atmosphere. We started with a selection of local cheeses, each with its own distinct flavour profile. From creamy fontina to tangy toma, it was a cheese lover's paradise. For our main courses, Aoife chose the fondue, while I opted for the raclette, both classic alpine dishes that were rich, comforting, and utterly delicious. This would be a perfect restaurant to bring Róisín, I know she would love the cheese selection.

With our appetites sated, we strolled through the village of Cogne, soaking in its quaint charm. The streets were lined with traditional stone houses, adorned with flower-filled window boxes. We stumbled upon Les Dentellières de Cogne, a cooperative of local women who practice the art of lace-making, a tradition that dates back centuries in this region. The intricate designs and delicate craftsmanship were truly remarkable. Aoife, always appreciative of fine artistry, purchased a small lace doily as a memento of our visit. I admired the dedication and skill of these artisans, preserving a piece of Cogne's cultural heritage.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. Cogne offers a variety of local products, from artisanal cheeses and cured meats to handcrafted wooden souvenirs. We picked up some local honey and a jar of homemade jam, perfect for enjoying with our morning toast back in Dublin. It's always a pleasure to support local businesses and bring home a taste of our travels.
For dinner, we had reserved a table at Ristorante e Locanda Chalet del Lago, a restaurant renowned for its stunning lakeside setting and refined cuisine. The restaurant lived up to its reputation. We savoured a delicious meal of regional specialties, accompanied by a bottle of crisp Italian white wine. The tranquil setting, with the lake shimmering under the moonlight, created a magical ambiance. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Cogne. From the invigorating hike through the Sentiero Natura to the cultural immersion at the Fondation Grand Paradis, every moment was a delight. And of course, the culinary experiences were simply divine. Cogne has captured a piece of my heart, and I know that Aoife and I will cherish these memories for years to come.
Tomorrow, we are planning to hike up Monte Creya and visit Lago Goletta. I am hoping to get some amazing photos of the lake and surrounding mountains. We'll also stop by Old Distillery for a drink in the evening. I have heard that they have an amazing selection of local spirits.
“The best view comes after the hardest climb.” I am looking forward to another day of exploring Gran Paradiso National Park.
Until tomorrow,
Ahmad.
