A Day Among Giants

Today was a day of conquering heights, both literally and figuratively, here in Gran Paradiso National Park. Aoife and I embarked on a journey that tested our stamina, rewarded us with breathtaking views, and treated our palates to the finest flavors of the Aosta Valley. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the bustling streets of Dublin for the serene landscapes of Europe, a journey not unlike my own from Kluang to a new life.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Brasserie du Bon Bec in Cogne. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, a perfect start to fuel our adventurous day. Aoife, with her usual enthusiasm, ordered a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, while I opted for a simple yet satisfying cornetto and cappuccino. The reviews I'd read about the exceptional service and warm atmosphere proved to be spot on, setting a positive tone for the adventures ahead.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off towards Monte Creya. The drive itself was a treat, winding through picturesque valleys and offering glimpses of the majestic Gran Paradiso peak. As we approached Monte Creya, the landscape transformed into a rugged terrain, a stark reminder of the mountain's imposing presence. We learned that the mines of Cogne, located on the slopes of Monte Creya, have a rich history dating back to Roman times and lasting until 1979, a testament to the area's industrial past.

The hike up Monte Creya was challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. From our vantage point at 3,015 meters, we could see the entire Gran Paradiso National Park stretching out before us, a tapestry of green valleys, snow-capped peaks, and glistening lakes. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and pine trees. Aoife, ever the nature enthusiast, identified several species of alpine flora, while I busied myself capturing the stunning scenery with my camera. I felt a sense of accomplishment, reminiscent of the satisfaction I get from perfecting a new dish at my restaurant.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that push us beyond our comfort zone, revealing hidden strengths and unforgettable vistas.

After descending from Monte Creya, we drove towards Lago Goletta, eager to experience another facet of Gran Paradiso's natural beauty. The hike to Lago Goletta was less strenuous than our earlier climb, but equally rewarding. The trail wound through lush meadows and dense forests, offering glimpses of cascading waterfalls and the occasional marmot scurrying across our path. The summer sun warmed our skin as we made our way along the path.

As we reached Lago Goletta, the sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. The lake's crystal-clear waters reflected the surrounding mountains like a mirror, creating a scene of unparalleled serenity. We found a secluded spot on the shore and enjoyed a picnic lunch, savoring the flavors of local bread, cheese, and fruit. The tranquility of the lake was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of daily life, a moment of peace that both Aoife and I deeply appreciated. We learned that the lake sits at the foot of a glacier that once touched its shores, a reminder of the ever-changing nature of our planet.

Our lunch was at Rifugio Grauson - 2510 m, a mountain refuge known for its hearty cuisine and stunning views. After our hike to Lago Goletta, we were more than ready for a filling meal. The refuge was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that perfectly complemented its alpine setting. We indulged in a steaming bowl of lentil soup and shared a plate of polenta with local cheese, simple yet satisfying dishes that warmed us from the inside out. It reminded me of the simple, hearty dishes my mother used to make back in Kluang.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Lanterna del Duca in Ceresole Reale for dinner. This restaurant had been highly recommended for its traditional Piedmontese cuisine and warm ambiance. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the aroma of roasting meats and simmering sauces, a symphony of scents that immediately made our mouths water. I opted for the brasato al Barolo, a slow-cooked beef dish in Barolo wine, while Aoife chose the agnolotti del plin, small pasta pockets filled with meat and cheese. Each dish was a masterpiece of flavor and presentation, a testament to the chef's culinary expertise.

After dinner, we decided to cap off our day with a visit to Old Distillery, a charming bar known for its local brews and cozy atmosphere. As we sipped on our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Gran Paradiso National Park. The bar was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration, adventure, and culinary delights.

As we head back to our campsite, I can’t help but think about how much this trip has rejuvenated us. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille and Prato di Sant’Orso, and maybe even stop by La Bottega Incantata for a souvenir. But for now, I’m content to drift off to sleep under the stars, dreaming of the majestic peaks and flavorsome dishes that have made this day so unforgettable. Days like this make me realize how important it is to embrace new experiences, whether it’s trying a new dish or exploring a new mountain. It’s all about expanding our horizons and finding joy in the simple things in life.
