A Day of Alpine Wonders

Today, Aoife and I ventured deeper into the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park, and it was nothing short of magical. From cascading waterfalls to serene valleys, the day was a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. I felt a world away from my restaurant in Dublin, trading the sizzle of spices for the crisp mountain air. It’s days like these that remind me why I needed this escape.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante La Genzianella. It was a charming spot, filled with locals and the aroma of freshly baked bread. I opted for some local salumi and cheese, while Aoife enjoyed a traditional Italian breakfast. It reminded me of the simple, satisfying meals back in Kluang, where fresh ingredients always took center stage. The restaurant is known for its regional dishes, generous portions, and friendly service. I made a mental note to try to recreate some of these flavors back home, perhaps a polenta dish with wild game, something that would transport my Dublin diners to the Italian Alps.

Fueled up, we set off towards Cascate di Lillaz. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The weather in Gran Paradiso in July is usually mildly cool, and today was no exception, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 18°C. Perfect for a hike!

Arriving at Lillaz, we parked the car and began our trek towards the waterfalls. The trail was well-maintained, and I was glad to see it wasn't too strenuous; Aoife and I wanted a leisurely stroll, not an endurance test. As we walked, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building anticipation. I was eager to capture some photos, so I made sure my camera was ready. July is a great time to visit Gran Paradiso National Park. The weather is usually mildly cool and humid, making it perfect for hiking.

Finally, we reached Cascate di Lillaz, and what a sight! The waterfalls are a series of three main drops along the Urtier River, cascading down a total height of about 150 meters. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding greenery added to the picturesque scene. I spent a good hour snapping photos from different angles, trying to capture the beauty of the falls. Aoife, ever the patient one, found a comfortable spot to sit and read, occasionally glancing up to admire the view. We even discovered a fourth, “Bonus” waterfall above them, the Cascata Biolet, which was worth visiting too.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

The hike around Cascate di Lillaz is considered easy, and I'd agree with that assessment. There were some stairs and a few steep sections, but overall, it was manageable for all fitness levels. The entire trail is less than 2km long, but we took our time, soaking in the scenery. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Dublin. The falls are located within the territory of the Gran Paradiso National Park. The waterfalls consist of three main drops with a total height of approximately 150 m (490 ft). They are accessible via a trail.

After the waterfalls, we drove to Vallone dell'Urtier, a valley known for its natural beauty. The drive from Lillaz to Vallone dell'Urtier was short, and soon we were embarking on another hike. This time, the landscape was different – more open, with vast meadows and distant mountain peaks. The trail was well-marked, and the walk was relatively easy, making it suitable for most tourists. Proper walking shoes and enough water are recommended for the hike.

Vallone dell'Urtier is a hidden gem located in the stunning Aosta Valley, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. This park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of trails that cater to all skill levels. As we ventured through the park, we were surrounded by majestic mountains, lush greenery, and the soothing sounds of nature, making it an ideal destination for hiking, photography, and relaxation. The area is particularly famous for its vibrant wildflowers in the spring and summer, adding bursts of color to the already picturesque landscape.

For lunch, we stopped at Rifugio Massimo Mila, a charming mountain refuge. I had heard good things about their cuisine, and I was eager to try it. The rifugio is reachable by car and is similar to restaurants and hotels in terms of visitors and tourism offerings. The hut particularly relies on weekend tourists who, after experiencing the different tourism opportunities provided by the surrounding lake environment (e.g., biking, bouldering and hiking), normally have lunch at Massimo Mila.

We were not disappointed! I opted for a hearty mountain stew, while Aoife chose a vegetarian pasta dish. The food was simple but delicious, and the portions were generous. It reminded me of the comforting dishes my mother used to make back in Malaysia. It’s funny how food can evoke such strong memories. I also learned that the rifugio caters to special dietary requirements, offering vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. A very inclusive approach!

In the late afternoon, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Vinosteria Antirouille. It was a cozy wine bar with a young vibe, specializing in local food and wines of Aosta Valley. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking. We sampled some local wines and enjoyed a platter of regional cheeses and cured meats. It was a delightful experience, and I made a mental note to recommend this place to my blog readers. Vinosteria Antirouille (Aymavilles) is a fun place to stop for lunch – or for sipping a glass of wine or a local draft beer.

For dinner, we headed to Bar Ristorante Valnontey in Valnontey. The restaurant has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Restaurant Guru. We enjoyed a traditional Italian meal, savoring every bite. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As the sun began to set, we drove back to our accommodation, feeling content and refreshed. Today was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life – nature, good food, and good company. I am already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventure, where we plan to explore Sentiero Natura Cogne and Fondation Grand Paradis. I’m also hoping to pick up some local lace at Les Dentellières de Cogne. I’ve heard it’s exquisite. We will also dine at Ristorante Sant'Orso for breakfast, Bar à Fromage, restaurant de montagne for lunch, and Ristorante e Locanda Chalet del Lago for dinner.

Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about my restaurant back in Dublin. I wondered what my staff was up to and whether they were managing without me. I also thought about the flavors and experiences I had today, and how I could incorporate them into my menu. Perhaps a Gran Paradiso-inspired dish? The possibilities are endless.

Tomorrow, we will explore Sentiero Natura Cogne and Fondation Grand Paradis, and I can't wait to share those experiences with you all. For now, goodnight from Gran Paradiso National Park!

There are several events taking place in Aosta Valley, Italy. These include music festivals, mountain bike events, and food markets. However, nothing is taking place in Cogne today.
