Following Royal Footsteps and Embracing Alpine Beauty

Today, Aoife and I delved deeper into the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park, exploring remnants of royal history and immersing ourselves in the stunning alpine scenery. It was a day of discovery, blending cultural heritage with the raw beauty of nature. The crisp mountain air and the promise of untold stories made it a day to remember.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Barme. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. As we approached Orvieille, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green meadows and dense forests, a stark contrast to the urban life Aoife and I have become accustomed to in Dublin.

The Royal Hunting House at Orvieille, once a favorite retreat for King Vittorio Emanuele II, exuded an aura of history. I could almost imagine the king and his entourage traversing these very grounds, seeking respite in the wilderness. The structure itself was simple, yet elegant, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. It was fascinating to learn about its transformation from a royal abode to a research facility, now serving as a base for park rangers and scientific studies. Aoife, with her librarian's curiosity, was particularly intrigued by the historical significance of the site and spent a good amount of time examining the displays and reading about the area's past.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After soaking in the history of Orvieille, we made our way to Prato di Sant’Orso, a vast expanse of alpine meadow that stretches across Cogne. The sheer size of the meadow was breathtaking. The Prato di Sant’Orso is one of the largest alpine meadows in Europe, and as we strolled along its perimeter, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The views of the Gran Paradiso massif in the distance were simply majestic. It’s easy to see why this area is considered a ‘Wonder of Italy’. The meadow was alive with activity; locals were tending to the fields, preparing hay for the winter, and tourists were leisurely strolling, soaking in the scenery. The air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers and the gentle hum of bees.

For lunch, we decided to try Ristorante Hostellerie De L'Atelier in Cogne. The restaurant came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with a touch of rustic charm. We savored traditional Valdostan dishes, each bite a celebration of local flavors. Aoife particularly enjoyed the *seupetta*, a traditional rice soup with fontina cheese, while I indulged in the *favò*, pasta with broad beans and fontina. We paired our meal with a local wine, its crisp taste perfectly complementing the hearty fare.

After our delightful lunch, we explored the charming village of Cogne. The streets were lined with quaint shops and cafes, each exuding a unique character. We stumbled upon La Bottega Incantata, a small shop filled with local crafts and souvenirs. Aoife, always on the lookout for unique gifts, spent a considerable amount of time browsing through the intricate lacework and handcrafted items. I picked up a small wooden carving of an ibex, a symbol of the Gran Paradiso National Park, as a memento of our trip.

In the evening, we dined at Lou Bequet, a restaurant known for its traditional cuisine and warm ambiance. The restaurant is located just before the entrance to Cogne, and the large panoramic window offered a magnificent view of the Sant'Orso meadow. The crackling fireplace added to the cozy atmosphere, making it a perfect setting for a relaxed dinner. We enjoyed the Gran Paradiso soup, a hearty and flavorful broth that perfectly captured the essence of the region. The service was impeccable, and the staff was attentive to our every need.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences. The Royal Hunting House at Orvieille offered a glimpse into the region's royal past, while the Prato di Sant’Orso showcased the unparalleled beauty of the alpine landscape. The local cuisine, with its hearty flavors and traditional recipes, provided a taste of the region's cultural heritage. It was a day of contrasts, blending history, nature, and culinary delights into a seamless tapestry of experiences.

Tomorrow, we plan to ascend to new heights, literally! We're setting our sights on Gran Paradiso 4061m and the Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II. The climb promises to be challenging, but the rewards, I'm sure, will be well worth the effort. Aoife is a little nervous about the altitude, but I've assured her that we'll take it slow and steady. We've packed plenty of water and snacks, and we're both looking forward to the breathtaking views from the summit. We also plan to stop by Bar Centrale for a well-deserved drink after our descent. It’s going to be an early start, but the excitement of conquering Gran Paradiso is enough to keep us motivated.

As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the wonders of Gran Paradiso National Park. It's a place that has captured my heart, and I know that the memories we're creating here will last a lifetime.

The experiences today made me think of my restaurant back in Dublin. I am always looking for ways to bring the authentic taste of Malaysia to Ireland, and today I was inspired by the way the chefs in Gran Paradiso use local ingredients to create dishes that are both delicious and representative of the region. Perhaps I can incorporate some Irish ingredients into Malaysian cuisine, creating a fusion that celebrates both cultures.

It’s moments like these, surrounded by natural beauty and cultural richness, that remind me why I embarked on this journey in the first place. To explore, to learn, and to share my experiences with the world. And to bring a little bit of that world back home with me, in the form of new ideas, new flavors, and new perspectives.
